Hidden Gems: Meet Robert Chavez of National Geographic Learning

Today we’d like to introduce you to Robert Chavez.

Hi Robert, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Robb’s MetalWorks is a San Antonio-based heavy metal media platform founded by Robert (Robb) Chavez in 1996. What began as a local passion project evolved into one of the longest-running independent voices documenting the Texas and South Texas metal scene, while also covering nationally and internationally known artists.

For nearly 30 years, Robb’s MetalWorks has focused on:

In-depth interviews with metal musicians, from legendary acts to underground bands.
Promoting Texas heavy metal and giving regional artists exposure alongside major touring acts.
Covering concerts, festivals, album releases, and the culture surrounding heavy music.
Preserving the history of San Antonio’s reputation as one of Texas’ most passionate metal cities.

What separates Robb’s MetalWorks from many music outlets is its emphasis on relationships. Rather than chasing sensationalism or gossip, the platform has built long-term trust with artists, labels, promoters, and fans. That credibility has led to interviews with internationally recognized musicians while never losing sight of local talent.

As the brand approaches its 30th anniversary in 2026, it represents:

Three decades of consistent support for heavy metal.
Thousands of interviews, reviews, and promotional features.
A bridge between emerging bands and established artists.
A historical archive of Texas metal and the broader heavy music community.

From our previous conversations, I also know you’ve been preparing branding around this milestone—including “30 Years of Fortitude,” anniversary artwork, special invitation-only events, and commemorative graphics—which reinforces the idea that the anniversary isn’t simply about longevity, but about celebrating a lifetime of dedication to heavy music.

A fitting way to describe the legacy is:

“Since 1996, Robb’s MetalWorks has championed heavy music with integrity, passion, and unwavering support for the artists and fans who keep metal alive. For 30 years, it has served as both a voice for the scene and a living archive of its history.”

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
* sacrificing family time
* financially self-sufficient (we never monetized our program)
* adapting to the digital era in 2010
* staying focused on mission/vision
