Today we’d like to introduce you to Victor Valdes.
Hi Victor, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My journey as a photographer has been a mix of curiosity, passion, and a lot of learning along the way. I’ve always been fascinated by people, emotions, and the little moments that often go unnoticed, and photography became the way I could preserve and tell those stories.
I started photography 13 years ago, initially exploring different types of photography and learning through experience, practice, and simply taking my camera everywhere I went. Over time, I realized that what I enjoyed most wasn’t just creating beautiful images—it was documenting real moments and the genuine connections between people.
That realization led me to focus on documentary wedding photography. I fell in love with the idea of being present without constantly directing or interrupting what is happening. Weddings are full of incredible little stories: the nervous excitement before the ceremony, a parent’s reaction, friends laughing, grandparents watching from across the room, and all those spontaneous moments that couples may not even notice on the day itself. Those are the photographs I love creating.
Today, I’m based in Saltillo, Coahuila, Mexico, where I’ve built my photography business and have had the opportunity to photograph weddings, families, couples, and all kinds of meaningful celebrations. My work has also taken me to different places in Mexico and across Texas, which has been incredibly exciting for me.
I was actually born in Houston, Texas, so Texas has always had a special connection to my story. Now, one of my biggest goals is to expand my wedding photography coverage into San Antonio and the surrounding area. I’m excited about the possibility of bringing my documentary approach to couples there while continuing to grow as a photographer and storyteller.
Looking back, I’m grateful that something that started with simply picking up a camera has turned into a career that allows me to meet amazing people, experience important moments in their lives, and preserve those memories for them. And honestly, I’m even more excited about where the next chapter is taking me.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road, and I think that’s part of what makes the journey meaningful.
One of the biggest challenges has been building a photography business from the ground up. Photography is a creative career, but it’s also a business, and learning how to balance the two has been a constant process. There have been plenty of moments of uncertainty—figuring out pricing, marketing, finding the right clients, managing the business side, and learning how to keep moving forward even when things don’t go exactly as planned.
Another challenge has been learning to trust my own style. Early on, like many photographers, I was influenced by what I saw around me and by what was popular at the time. Eventually, I realized that the work I was most passionate about was the work that felt genuine to me: documenting real emotions and authentic moments rather than trying to make every photograph look perfectly posed or staged.
Working between Mexico and the United States has also brought its own challenges, but it has been a really rewarding experience. Being based in Mexico while having roots in Texas means I’m constantly thinking about how to connect with people and communities in both places. Now that I’m looking to expand my wedding photography coverage into San Antonio, I’m stepping into another new chapter, which comes with its own uncertainties—but also a lot of excitement.
If anything, the challenges have taught me that you don’t have to have everything figured out before taking the next step. You just have to keep learning, stay true to what you do, and be willing to put yourself out there.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a documentary wedding photographer, and at the heart of my work is something very simple: I want people to remember how a moment felt, not just how it looked.
I specialize in weddings, but I also photograph families, couples, maternity sessions, engagements, and other meaningful moments. What connects all of my work is my approach—I’m always looking for real emotions, genuine interactions, and those little in-between moments that happen naturally.
For me, documentary photography isn’t about standing on the sidelines and simply taking pictures. It’s about being observant, anticipating moments, and knowing when to step in and when to let a moment unfold on its own. A wedding day can move incredibly fast, and there are so many things happening at the same time. I love being the person who notices the things my clients might miss.
What I’m most proud of is the trust people place in me. A wedding is incredibly personal, and couples are allowing me into some of the most meaningful and emotional moments of their lives. Being able to preserve those memories for them is something I never take for granted.
I think what sets me apart is that I’m not trying to make every wedding look the same. I don’t want to recreate someone else’s Pinterest board or force moments just because they look good in a photograph. I want each wedding gallery to feel like that couple and that particular day.
I also believe that a great wedding photograph doesn’t necessarily have to be perfect. Sometimes the photograph where everyone is laughing, crying, moving, or completely unaware of the camera can be much more powerful than a perfectly posed portrait.
Ultimately, I see myself as a storyteller with a camera. My job is to observe, anticipate, and preserve the moments that make each story unique. And that’s what keeps me excited about photography after all these years—I never know what the next wedding, the next family, or the next moment is going to bring.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
A lot of things make me happy, but I think what makes me happiest is being surrounded by people I love and being able to enjoy the little things in life.
I’m happiest when I’m creating something, discovering a new place, traveling, sharing a good meal, laughing with friends and family, or simply having one of those conversations that somehow turns into hours without anyone noticing.
Photography is a big part of that happiness because it allows me to experience life through other people’s stories. I get to witness some of the happiest, most emotional, and meaningful days in people’s lives, and I feel incredibly lucky to be invited into those moments.
I also really enjoy traveling and exploring new places. There’s something about being somewhere I’ve never been before that makes me feel curious and inspired. I love discovering new landscapes, cities, food, and especially the people and stories that make each place unique.
And honestly, I’ve learned to appreciate the simple things much more over the years. A great cup of coffee, a beautiful sunset, a road trip, a good conversation, or coming home after a long day can make me genuinely happy.
I think happiness, for me, comes down to being present. Life moves incredibly fast, and one of the reasons I love photography so much is that it has taught me to slow down and pay attention to the moments that are easy to overlook. Those little moments are often the ones that end up meaning the most.
