Today we’d like to introduce you to Thomas Browne.
Hi Thomas, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Years ago, I started a YouTube channel where I intended to make short skits. One of those skits was going to be a commercial for a company that offered to do any type of job for a fraction of the cost, leaving a lot to the imagination of the viewer as far as what kind of jobs these would be.
I knew from the start that I wanted the skits to be animated so I approached the great animator and tremendous voice actor, Andrew Buchanan. I asked him to come with me to a cemetery in the middle of summer in my ’96 Subaru Outback with no A/C to record the audio for the skit. The skit was so good that it became the intro for what is now The Handymen mini series. Fast forward 9 years to today, The Handymen launched a successful pilot episode on YouTube, which reached 30k views within the first month of its debut. Meanwhile, episode 2 is currently in the works!
It has been a challenging, yet incredible journey and seeing how far we’ve come has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. The Handymen is just getting started, and we’re so excited for the next chapter!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It’s been a rocky road for sure. As much as I love The Handymen, it’s been extremely difficult to fund. All of the funds have basically come straight out of pocket. I am blessed to have found animators that work with me, an independent creator.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am the creator, director, producer, writer, and voice actor for The Handymen.
I’m most proud of the pilot episode and all the blood, sweat, and tears that went into making it happen. It’s easy to lose sight of your project’s direction when the process takes so much of your time and resources. You find yourself fighting that doubt of whether it will be worth it, which can be very emotionally and mentally exhausting. Thankfully, I had all the right people for the job. I have worked with some of the most talented people I’ve ever known to help bring this vision to life. After two and a half years though, watching it complete is very gratifying.
