Hi Imani, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
It could be said that the beginning of this venture was my childhood. I was diagnosed with ADHD as an adult but there were plenty of signs as I was growing up. Along the years, like many other people, I learned to mask some of the behaviors. Now as an adult studying to become a clinical psychologist, a mom, veteran, and serial hobbyist, I want to change the neurodivergent experience for the better. I started with crochet hats, small plushies, and purses. My intention there was to give people a medium of expression while also providing a possible comfort item through the texture of each stitch. As time went on and the more customer interactions I had, I realized how much more I could do to provide people not only a stylish accessory but also sensory and regulation tools.
I now offer science backed sensory devices and regulatory options that are also discreet and fun.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I believe with any journey you take there will always be some obstacles and pot holes. As a business that is still growing and learning I have learned to welcome each one as a learning opportunity and a challenge to push myself creatively and professionally. Learning what people want, methods of production, and the practicality of transporting everything to each pop up event have been eye opening. It’s easy to see trendy toys and crochet items on social media or in stores and think “yeah, I could sell that.” But to put care into each item I handmade and create products that are original but can be relatable to the experience of others, is a commitment that requires a deeper drive and passion outside of making money.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I started off crocheting and making bracelets, as I researched and talked to customers and friends I began to provide more products. Today I am still well known for my hats and also stickers and slime. As a creative, I can’t help but to expand my product line and diversify what I have to offer. It’s all in the name of”Just Good Chaos”, there is a little bit of everything for people to come and identify with or spark some kind of joy with. I am very proud of my fidget toys: flexible crochet worms, crochet character stress balls, fidget clickers, weighted crochet characters, and worry stones. I know that these all are new ideas that have never been seen or heard of, but what sets me apart is that everything I make is handmade and intentional. I not only take the time to make each item, I also research the material I use, the practicality of each item in everyday life, the science behind it, and the longevity of use. I want to know and be able make as much of the materials for each item as possible. From the type of glue used for the slime I make, the process to make the yarn that I crochet with, to the clay for each worry stone I make, I want to own as much of the process as possible so that I can ensure that I am able to provide the quality every person deserves.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
The most important qualities for success to me would be open mindedness and humility. I have made hats or purses that I am so proud of and confident will be a crowd favorite that end up never selling. I’ve had pop up markets where I made maybe one or two sales and started to question myself as a creative. It’s then that I connect with people and really listen to what people like, what their struggles are, and what they could be missing; I find the best solution I can offer and accept that I’m not always going to have the next biggest thing.
