Today we’d like to introduce you to Luz Serreli.
Luz, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started drawing in a high-school class in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico; that is where my passion for drawing and the world of visual art began. Later, I pursued a degree in Architecture at the University of Monterrey.
I subsequently put my career on hold to start a family, resuming it in 2016 when I learned to paint with oils—a medium I continue to work with today. During the pandemic, I start taking classes at the NYAA, New York Academy of Art, where I completed my CFA, Certificate of Fine Arts, in 2026; I am now candidate MFA, Master in Fine Arts with a concentration in sculpture, thereby returning to 3D work and And returning to my training as an Architect.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I believe every career path has its obstacles and challenges. For me, it has certainly been a difficult journey, given the high level of competition and talent in the field. On a personal level, raising a family—having two children and instilling values and love in them—meant putting my career on hold. I didn’t resume my studies until my youngest daughter left for college, so I am starting over at age 45—albeit with a sense of maturity and a strong drive to work.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
As an artist, I have learned various painting techniques, with my specialty being direct painting in oils. For drawing, I enjoy working with charcoal and pastels. While I have worked extensively with clay in sculpture, I am currently specializing in resin: I sculpt in clay, create a mold, and finally cast the piece in resin. This allows me to achieve a marble-like finish without the high cost of stone, while also making the work much lighter and easier to transport. I believe time will tell what sets me apart from other artists; right now, there are many of us emerging artists evolving day by day, reflecting the rapid pace at which the world is moving.
What matters most to you?
This is a topic that could be discussed at length, but right now, what concerns me most is the arrogance we possess as human beings—an arrogance that leads us to show little to no empathy, inclines us toward racism, and causes us to reject migrants, even those of our own race.
