Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Judy Staveley.
Hi Dr. Judy, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My journey has never followed a straight path, and I believe that has been one of my greatest strengths. Throughout my career, I have been guided by a simple principle: use science, education, and leadership to serve others.
As a first-generation college student and proud STEMM Latina, I pursued opportunities that allowed me to combine my passion for biotechnology, public health, education, and national service. Over the years, I have earned multiple graduate degrees in biology, emerging infectious diseases, medical forensics, educational leadership, public health, and public policy, while building a career that has spanned higher education, federal government, scientific research, defense, and biotechnology.
I have had the privilege of serving as a biotechnology program director and professor, helping students launch successful careers in the life sciences. Later, I transitioned into federal service, where I worked in defense and public health supporting biotechnology innovation, medical countermeasures, supply chain resilience, and national preparedness. Those experiences reinforced the importance of collaboration across government, industry, academia, and the nonprofit sector.
Alongside my professional career, I have always believed in giving back through volunteerism and mentorship. As the spouse of a military veteran and someone whose family has a long history of military service, I understand firsthand the sacrifices made by service members and their families. That perspective inspired me to mentor students, support veterans, and advocate for STEMM education and workforce development.
In 2024, I founded The Platform Magazine Foundation with the vision of creating a nonprofit organization that highlights people who make a positive difference while connecting communities through education, leadership, service, and storytelling. Today, our Foundation supports veterans, military families, students, educators, and future leaders through scholarships, mentoring, STEMM initiatives, community outreach, and programs that preserve and celebrate America’s legacy of service.
Looking back, every chapter of my career has prepared me for the next. Whether I was teaching in a classroom, advising biotechnology programs, serving in government, publishing stories, or leading a nonprofit, the mission has remained the same: to educate, inspire, and create opportunities that empower others to make a lasting impact.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It certainly has not been a smooth road, but I would not change the journey because every challenge has shaped who I am today. Like many women in STEMM and leadership, I have experienced moments where I had to work harder to earn credibility and demonstrate my expertise. I have also navigated career transitions, organizational changes, and the uncertainty that often comes with pursuing new opportunities. Rather than viewing those experiences as setbacks, I chose to see them as opportunities to grow, learn, and become more resilient.
One of the greatest balancing acts has been wearing many hats at once. Throughout my career, I have been an educator, scientist, federal employee, researcher, military spouse, volunteer, mentor, publisher, and now the founder of a nonprofit organization. Building something meaningful from the ground up requires long hours, perseverance, and a willingness to continue moving forward even when resources are limited.
Launching The Platform Magazine Foundation has been both one of my greatest joys and one of my greatest challenges. As a young nonprofit, every partnership, sponsorship, volunteer, and donation matters. We are building a sustainable organization while remaining committed to our mission of serving veterans, military families, students, and communities through education, leadership, and service.
If there is one lesson I have learned, it is that obstacles are rarely the end of the story. They often become the experiences that prepare you for your next opportunity. I have learned to embrace change, remain adaptable, and focus on purpose rather than perfection. That mindset has allowed me to continue moving forward and to help others do the same.

I have built my career at the intersection of science, education, leadership, and public service. My work has spanned in biotechnology, public health, higher education, federal government, nonprofit leadership, and publishing, but the common thread has always been creating opportunities that improve lives and strengthen communities.
Professionally, I specialize in biotechnology, infectious diseases, public health preparedness, medical countermeasures, supply chain resilience, and STEMM workforce development. Throughout my career, I have led biotechnology programs, taught and mentored future scientists, supported federal initiatives that strengthen our nation’s health security, and collaborated with government, industry, academia, and nonprofit organizations to address complex scientific challenges.
Today, I am the Founder and Executive Director of The Platform Magazine Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving veterans, military families, students, and communities through education, leadership, mentorship, and service. Through our Foundation, we produce meaningful stories that inspire others while developing programs that support scholarships, STEMM education, veteran initiatives, workforce development, and community engagement.
What I am most proud of is helping people discover their own potential. Whether mentoring a student who becomes a scientist, recognizing a veteran’s continued service, connecting leaders through our publication, or creating opportunities for young people to pursue careers in STEMM, I measure success by the impact I can make in someone else’s life.
I believe what sets me apart is my ability to bridge worlds that do not always intersect. I understand science and technology, but I also understand leadership, communication, public service, and the power of storytelling. I have experienced the worlds of academia, government, nonprofit leadership, and industry, allowing me to bring diverse perspectives together to solve problems and build meaningful partnerships.
Above all, I hope to be known not simply for my professional accomplishments, but for my commitment to serving others. Leadership is not about titles or recognition. It is about creating opportunities, empowering others to succeed, and leaving every community stronger than you found it.

I believe the greatest impact happens through collaboration. No one organization or individual can solve today’s challenges alone, whether they involve education, public health, workforce development, veteran support, or community engagement.
