Hi Reagan, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My journey into publishing started with a love of books and storytelling, but it quickly evolved into a passion for helping authors bring their work to readers. Over the years, I’ve worked in various areas of the publishing industry, gaining experience in editorial development, production, marketing, and distribution. Today, as the owner of Black Rose Writing, I have the privilege of working with bestselling authors from around the world and helping guide their books from manuscript to marketplace. What has kept me motivated throughout the journey is the opportunity to promote these great stories and help authors achieve goals they may have once thought were out of reach.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. The publishing industry has changed dramatically over the past fifteen years, and we’ve had to continually adapt to stay relevant and provide the best possible experience for our authors. We’ve seen the rise of eBooks, audiobooks, social media marketing, online retail dominance, AI tools, and an increasingly crowded marketplace where thousands of new books are released every day.
One of the biggest challenges has been keeping pace with those changes while maintaining the quality and personal attention our authors expect. We’ve had to evolve our marketing strategies, expand distribution opportunities, embrace new technologies, and continually refine our processes. The silver lining is that those challenges have made us even better. The ability to remain flexible has been one of the biggest factors in Black Rose Writing’s growth and longevity, and it has allowed us to help our authors succeed in an industry that never stops changing.
We’ve been impressed with Black Rose Writing, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Black Rose Writing is an independent publishing company dedicated to discovering and developing exceptional books across a wide range of genres. We work closely with our authors throughout the entire publishing process, from manuscript development and editing to design, production, distribution, and marketing. While we’re known for publishing award-winning and bestselling titles, what truly sets us apart is the personal attention we give every author and project.
In an industry that can often feel impersonal, we’ve built our reputation on relationships. We take pride in being accessible, transparent, and invested in our authors’ long-term success. Our goal isn’t simply to publish books—it’s to help authors build meaningful careers and connect with readers around the world.
What I’m most proud of is the community we’ve created. Over the years, we’ve had the opportunity to work with incredible authors, many of whom have gone on to win major awards, achieve bestseller status, and build loyal readerships. Seeing those successes and knowing we played a role in helping bring those stories to life is incredibly rewarding. At the end of the day, Black Rose Writing is about championing great stories and providing authors with a publishing partner that genuinely cares about their success.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
The publishing industry will continue to evolve alongside technology, but superb storytelling will always be at its core. I expect to see continued growth in audiobooks, direct-to-reader marketing, and the use of AI as a tool to support—rather than replace—the publishing process. While there will always be debate around new technology, publishers and authors who learn to use these tools responsibly will have a real advantage. Authors will have more opportunities than ever to reach readers, but they’ll also face increased competition, making quality, professionalism, and authentic audience engagement more important than ever.
