Daily Inspiration: Meet Lindsay Mashak

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsay Mashak.

Hi Lindsay, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I began my journey with San Antonio Visiting Angels when the agency first opened in 2015, joining the team as the Office Manager. I quickly discovered that caring for seniors wasn’t just a job—it was something I was truly passionate about. Over the years, I learned every aspect of the business while building relationships with our care recipients, their families, and our Angels.

In April 2022, when the previous owners decided to retire, my mother, Deanna, and I had the opportunity to purchase the agency. It was an exciting moment for our family because we shared the same vision of providing compassionate, high-quality care that allows seniors to remain safely and comfortably in their own homes. My sisters, Allyssa and Braidyn, also became involved by supporting our administrative and marketing efforts remotely.

Sadly, we lost our mother unexpectedly in December 2023. While that was an incredibly difficult time for our family, it strengthened our commitment to continue the business she loved. Today, we operate San Antonio Visiting Angels in her honor, carrying forward the values she instilled in us: compassion, integrity, and treating every care recipient like family. It is a privilege to serve seniors throughout the San Antonio community, and we’re proud to make a positive difference in their lives every day.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but every challenge has helped shape who we are today. Like many businesses, we faced the uncertainty of taking over ownership while navigating the lingering effects of the pandemic, staffing shortages, and the rising demand for quality in-home care. Recruiting and retaining compassionate Angels has been one of our biggest ongoing challenges, especially in an industry where they’re in such high demand.

Our greatest challenge, however, was the unexpected loss of my mother in December 2023. She wasn’t just my business partner—she was my mom, mentor, and biggest supporter. Balancing grief while continuing to lead the business was incredibly difficult, but our care recipients and Angels were counting on us. That responsibility gave our family the strength to move forward.

Through every obstacle, we’ve remained focused on our mission of providing exceptional care to seniors. Those experiences have made us more resilient, strengthened our relationships with our team and care recipients, and reinforced why we do what we do. Today, I can honestly say that every challenge has made us a stronger agency and strengthened our commitment to serving the San Antonio community.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Professionally, what I’m most proud of is building a business that truly makes a difference in people’s lives. I started with San Antonio Visiting Angels as the Office Manager in 2015, and over the years I’ve had the opportunity to grow into an owner. That journey has given me a deep appreciation for every role within the organization and for the people who make our mission possible.

I’m especially proud that we’ve continued to grow while staying true to our values of compassion, integrity, and personalized care. We’ve built a team of Angels who genuinely care about our care recipients, and there’s no greater reward than hearing from families that their loved one feels safe, respected, and able to remain independent at home because of the care we provide.

On a personal level, I’m also proud that my family has been able to continue the agency after the loss of my mother. Carrying on the business she helped build and honoring her legacy through the quality of care we provide every day is something that means a great deal to me. Seeing the positive impact we have on seniors, their families, and our Angels is what I’m most proud of and what motivates me every day.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
For me, success isn’t measured by awards or the size of the business. It’s measured by the impact we have on the people we serve. If a family has peace of mind knowing their loved one is safe, if a senior can remain in the comfort of their own home, or if one of our Angels feels valued and supported, then I consider that a success.

I also believe success is about staying true to your values, especially when things are difficult. We’ve faced challenges over the years, but we’ve continued to lead with compassion, integrity, and a commitment to doing what’s right for our care recipients and our team.

I’m grateful for how far we’ve come, but I don’t see success as a destination. It’s something we earn every day through the relationships we build, the trust our care recipients place in us, and the care we provide. If we can continue making a positive difference in our community, then I feel we’re succeeding.
