Hidden Gems: Meet Deja Taylor of Culinary Character

Today we’d like to introduce you to Deja Taylor.

Hi Deja, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My journey started with a passion for food, but not the confidence to pursue it professionally. I spent several years working in hospitality before realizing it was time to stop building someone else’s dream and start building my own.

I took a chance by hosting my first pop-up, delivering 10 free salmon burgers across Philadelphia just to see how people would respond. The positive feedback gave me the confidence to keep going. From there, I started selling globally inspired meals out of my mom’s kitchen while working a full-time job.

Eventually, I packed my bags and moved to Texas to pursue private dining and full-time entrepreneurship. That decision changed my life. It helped me discover my identity as a chef, a business owner, and a Black woman building a brand with purpose. Today, through Culinary Character, I create personalized culinary experiences that bring people together through food and genuine hospitality.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. One of the biggest challenges has been learning how to wear every hat. As a business owner, you’re not just the chef. You’re also the marketer, accountant, salesperson, content creator, and customer service representative.

Another challenge has been learning to trust myself. In the beginning, I struggled with confidence and often questioned whether I was ready. Over time, I realized that growth comes from taking opportunities before you feel completely prepared.

I’ve also learned that success isn’t always a straight line. There have been slow seasons, setbacks, and moments where I had to adapt, but each challenge has made me a better chef and a stronger entrepreneur. Looking back, those experiences have taught me resilience, patience, and the importance of believing in the vision even when the path isn’t always clear.

As you know, we’re big fans of Culinary Character. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Culinary Character is built around the belief that every meal should feel personal. While I love creating intimate private dining experiences, my business has grown to include private chef services for families, meal prep, cooking classes, and culinary consulting. Every menu is thoughtfully customized to reflect my clients’ tastes, lifestyle, and the occasion they’re celebrating.

I’m also excited to be relaunching my signature line of all-natural, salt-free, preservative-free spice blends, giving home cooks an easy way to create bold, globally inspired flavors with wholesome ingredients.

What sets Culinary Character apart is my versatility. I don’t believe in limiting myself to one cuisine or one type of service. Whether I’m serving a family each week, creating a multi-course private dinner, teaching a cooking class, or developing recipes, my goal is always the same: to create memorable experiences through food.

As the brand continues to grow, I’m excited to expand my private chef work with families while continuing to build Culinary Character into a lifestyle brand centered around great food, creativity, and genuine hospitality

What are your plans for the future?
I’m excited about the direction Culinary Character is heading. In the near future, I plan to continue growing my private chef services, especially with families, while also pursuing full-time private chef opportunities that allow me to build long-term relationships with clients.

I’m also looking forward to relaunching my signature line of all-natural, salt-free, preservative-free spice blends, expanding my cooking classes and culinary consulting services, and introducing new products and experiences that reflect the continued evolution of the brand.

Long term, my dream is to grow Culinary Character into a lifestyle brand with a brick-and-mortar space that brings people together through food, education, and community. I want it to be a place where people can enjoy great meals, learn new culinary skills, and connect with one another. I’m excited for what’s ahead and can’t wait to bring that vision to life.
