Inspiring Conversations with Dusti Jones of Dusti J Design

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dusti Jones.

Hi Dusti, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Growing up surrounded by contractors and construction projects, I’ve been dreaming up creative show-stopping designs for as long as I can remember.
But it’s actually my background as a professional counselor that shapes my approach. I don’t just focus on finishes and furnishings—I focus on my clients, taking the time to understand their needs, the rhythms of their life, and the vision for the future.

Before I became a designer, I was a mental health counselor. That’s where I learned how to really listen, untangle complex needs, and uncover what matters most. Today, I bring that same sensitivity to designing homes that make daily routines easier and my clients’ days brighter.

My style isn’t about imposing a look or following rules—it’s about tuning into what makes my clients light up. I believe great design happens when we lean into the quirks, embrace the unexpected, and honor the things that matter most.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Overall my experience as an interior designer has been incredible. From the phenomenal clients I’ve been blessed to work with, contractors that are passionate and hold a high standard in creating functional and beautiful spaces, knowledgeable vendors, detailed architects, and talented and passionate trades, all these people contribute to the positive journey. It is through these dynamics of a collaborative team working together toward a unified goal, high standards, and seeking the outcome of creating a home that is designed to serve, support, reflect, and care for the clients we are working for. When every detail reflects my clients’ needs, passions, and loves, the result is a space that boosts joy, inspires calm, and adapts effortlessly to their evolving life.

As the founder and principal interior designer with Dusti J Design, based in San Antonio, Texas, I bring a uniquely thoughtful and therapeutic approach to residential interior design, creating spaces that empower you to thrive in every season of your life. The process? Clear, collaborative, supportive—and yes, even fun.

Whether it’s full-scale renovations, residential construction, or virtual design, I’ll guide you with clarity and care, managing every detail, so even complex renovations feel smooth and stress-free. From updating a single room to guiding you through full-scale renovations and new builds, my services are designed to support you at every step. I handle the details—planning, selections, and project oversight—so you can focus on the excitement of seeing your vision come to life.

At the heart of my design process is the HOPEFUL framework—a thoughtful approach to creating spaces that truly reflect your needs and aspirations. With my signature HOPEFUL framework, we’ll go deeper than surface-level likes and dislikes to uncover what really matters—your values, priorities, and how you want to feel in your space. This signature method considers everything from the unique characteristics of your home to opportunities for enhancing how you live. It celebrates your family, personality, and the ways you spend your time, weaving these elements together into a design that feels authentic and supportive. With classic finishes, expertly chosen colors, and layers of warmth and character, I create spaces that elevate your life today and flex for tomorrow.

At Dusti J Design, we specialize in creating spaces that uplift your everyday life and set the stage for a future full of possibility. Recognized by the Interior Design Society (IDS) with a 2025 Designer of the Year award, we bring renovation management expertise, a trained eye for color, and a uniquely client-centered approach that makes the design process feel clear, collaborative, and deeply rewarding.

What’s next?
I anticipate continuing to build local relationships with incredible clients, contractors, architects, vendors and trades to create spaces that are personal, functional, and reflective of those who live in them. My goal has always been to create homes that serve my clients and provide the setting to empower them to thrive in every season, to serve as a sanctuary from the every day.
