Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthew Salay.
Hi Matthew, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’ve always wanted to paint but with my job at the time it was impossible to have any spare time to do it. So I would always talk my self out of it. Until one day I got hurt haha. I slipped and fell while delivering into a customer’s freezer and I dislocated my left shoulder. I was the worse pain I ever felt, yes even worse than stepping in a Lego. I was put on a 5 week long “light duty” period and that when I said screw it and bought all the shit I needed. Paints, easel, brushs and canvases. I only needed my right arm to do paint so it was perfect. Since I was on light duty I worked only 8 hours a day. It was amazing lol. I started with bob ross videos, making time lapses and posting them on tik tok and Instagram. I wouldn’t get much views or like. Then I came across a man named lowell speers who painted florals. He is the best. But there almost no info about him anywhere other than some old yohtube videos. I would paint off and on throughout the next couple of years until this past year I started uploaded consistently on every platform. My videos did meh….I did noticed the paiting videos got more love so I started paiting flowers again. Then I painted a purple rose floral and that one was like my first video that did really good and I got like 6k followers on Instagram. So now im doing more flowers painting stuff now.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Its hard to make the time to do it because im a truck driver. Allllllll my time and energy has to go to work. Im home one day out of the week and I have to make all my videos for the week in ine day usually. It hard, its time consuming but people are watching and that hypes me up big time.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Im definitely not the only person who paint flower paintings, but I do alot of florals paintings. I guess what setting me apart is alot of artists do time-lapse footage content and I film as I do it and film my mistakes and fixing them. I show everything. People like to see the entire process. I also just dont show the main paintings. I also film alot of my self practicing.
