Life & Work with Oscar Martinez of San Antonio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Oscar Martinez.

Hi Oscar, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised in San Antonio, Texas, and from an early age I was drawn to both service and problem-solving. I attended Central Catholic High School and then Georgetown University, where I earned a degree in Economics and initially worked in business consulting before realizing that medicine was where I felt most called to make an impact. I went on to earn my medical degree from UT Southwestern Medical Center and completed my Emergency Medicine residency training at Parkland Memorial Hospital.

For many years, I worked as an emergency physician and later served in leadership roles including Medical Director and Chief Medical Officer positions. During that time, I saw firsthand how common severe depression, PTSD, anxiety, and suicidality had become, and also how many patients continued to struggle despite trying traditional medications and therapy. In the emergency department, we were often helping people during the worst moments of their lives, but there were limited options that could provide rapid relief.

That experience ultimately led me to found San Antonio Ketamine Specialists, one of the first clinics in the region focused on ketamine infusion therapy for treatment-resistant mental health conditions. Over the past several years, we have treated hundreds of patients and have seen many life-changing outcomes for individuals who had nearly lost hope after years of unsuccessful treatments.

As the field evolved, I realized our vision was becoming broader than ketamine therapy alone. Mental health care is not one-size-fits-all, and patients deserve access to multiple evidence-based treatment options under thoughtful physician oversight. That led to the creation of Soluz Health, an interventional mental health clinic focused on integrating advanced treatments such as ketamine therapy and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) into a more comprehensive and patient-centered model of care.

Today, our goal at Soluz Health is to combine innovation with compassion while maintaining a locally owned, physician-led approach. We are passionate about offering treatments that can provide hope to patients who may feel they have run out of options, while also helping reduce the stigma surrounding mental health care in our community.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely has not been a completely smooth road. One of the biggest challenges has been helping educate both patients and medical professionals about newer interventional mental health treatments like ketamine therapy and TMS, especially in a field that is rapidly evolving. There have also been significant operational and regulatory challenges in building a physician-led clinic that prioritizes safety, ethics, and individualized care.

At the same time, those challenges have made the work incredibly meaningful. Seeing patients regain hope after years of struggling is what continues to drive our growth into Soluz Health and our broader vision for mental health care.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am an emergency physician and the founder of Soluz Health, an interventional mental health clinic specializing in advanced treatments for depression, PTSD, anxiety, and treatment-resistant mental health conditions. Our clinic focuses on therapies such as ketamine infusion therapy and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), with an emphasis on individualized, physician-led care.

What I’m most proud of is helping build a clinic that combines innovation with compassion. Many of our patients come to us after years of unsuccessful treatments, and being able to see people regain hope, reconnect with family, return to work, or simply enjoy life again is incredibly rewarding.

I believe what sets us apart is that we are a locally owned, physician-operated practice that prioritizes safety, thoughtful patient selection, and personalized treatment plans rather than a one-size-fits-all approach. We strive to create an environment where patients feel genuinely heard and cared for while also having access to some of the most advanced evidence-based treatments available in mental health today.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I’ve found that genuinely listening to people, continuing to learn, and staying committed to improving patient care, even when things are difficult, has been one of the biggest drivers of both personal and professional success.
