Inspiring Conversations with Bryant Rutledge of Higginbotham Insurance Agency

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bryant Rutledge.

Hi Bryant, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I was raised in North Texas, Frisco to be exact. I come from a great family that helped put me in the best position for success. I was fortunate to play college baseball at a couple different universities (Texas State & Angelo State). The lessons learned through athletics have kept me grounded and driven to be the best version of myself as possible.

I spent the first 6 years of my professional career in Medical Device Sales in Fort Worth, TX. I sold implantable devices (total knees and hips)… I worked with a lot of great people, that have been instrumental in my growth as a professional.

In the fall of 2019, I was recruited to come work for my current employer (Higginbotham), with the idea that I would be able to be an “intrapreneur” and develop a book of business in the industries and type of clients that I relate to best. Being that I had experience in Healthcare and medical devices, I started developing a network and a book of business in the Medtech/Biotech sector. My practice is now a global practice, helping companies of all sizes from clinical stage companies to commercialized and publicly traded firms.

I also support my local community, by working with a number of companies that are outside of the “medical” industry… non-profits, real estate, construction, restaurants, oil & gas, etc.

Getting out of the OR and into the community has been such a breath of fresh air. I’ve been able to connect with amazing people, support organizations doing real work, be part of something bigger than a transaction and making a real difference in the community. Being a resource and a helping hand to our neighbors and fellow community members, is meaningful and fulfilling.

I am currently an Executive Vice President for Higginbotham Insurance Agency… My wife (Jamie) and I now have 3 children; Hudson 5 1/2, Tillie 3 1/2 & Tucker 9 months old. My goal with my children to to teach them that with faith, family, hard work/grit, being genuine and doing right by others… anything is achievable.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not at all. This is a very difficult industry to break into. Everyone knows someone in insurance, it is a big expense for a lot of business owners, and the large majority of people don’t really understand how the industry operates. It doesn’t exactly carry the most favorable reputation with the general public either.

You are going to hear “no” way more than yes, and you have to be ok with that. Not every company is the right fit. It takes consistent networking to build strong, trusted relationships and real persistence to develop a book of business that is actually sustainable.

But even when things don’t go your way, there is always a takeaway that makes you sharper the next time around.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Higginbotham is an independent insurance agency, and that independence matters more than most people realize. We are not captive to any one carrier, which means we are always working in the best interest of our clients, not a quota.

My focus is business insurance with a heavy emphasis on risk management. The way I look at it, insurance is not just a box you check. It is a proactive strategy. The goal is to reduce claims, protect your people, and keep your company performing at a high level. As companies hit milestones, we benchmark where they are against where they need to be. That conversation changes as you grow, and I want to be the person in the room when it does.

I lead the Life Science vertical at Higginbotham, which means I have built genuine expertise in an industry that not many others have. I can sit across from a founder, a CFO, or a board and have a real strategic conversation, not just talk policy terms.

What sets me apart is simple. I want to understand your business first. What are your priorities? What keeps you up at night? Where are you headed? Once I understand that, I can align a plan that actually solves the right problem instead of just selling you something off a shelf.

If you are a business owner or senior executive, my job is to make insurance feel less like a burden and more like a competitive advantage. That is what I am building, and that is what I am proud of.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I actually really enjoy singing with my wife & kids about random things throughout the day… I am not a good singer, but they don’t seem to mind!
