Community Highlights: Meet Mark Kamburis of Dream Gruene Getaway

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mark Kamburis.

Hi Mark, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Dream Gruene Getaway grew out of my background in hospitality and a passion for creating memorable guest experiences. Before entering the vacation rental space, I spent many years in the restaurant industry in Austin, including co-owning Satellite… Eat Drink Orbit for over a decade.

I saw an opportunity to create a unique riverfront getaway in Gruene that combined walkability to Gruene Hall with a more personal, boutique-style hospitality experience. That vision became Dream Gruene Getaway — two side-by-side riverfront condos designed for families, groups, and anyone looking to relax and enjoy the Guadalupe River.

Over the years, we’ve focused heavily on guest experience, thoughtful amenities, and creating a place people want to return to year after year. What started as an idea has grown into a brand built largely through repeat guests, word of mouth, and great reviews, which has been incredibly rewarding to see.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road. Like most small business owners, we’ve faced our share of challenges along the way — from navigating the ups and downs of the hospitality industry to adapting to changing travel trends and increased competition in the vacation rental market.

There’s also a lot that goes on behind the scenes that guests never see — managing operations, maintenance, marketing, guest expectations, and constantly evolving technology platforms. Building a strong brand takes time and consistency.

At the same time, those challenges helped us grow and improve. We’ve learned to adapt quickly, focus heavily on guest experience, and continue finding ways to make Dream Gruene Getaway stand out. In many ways, the obstacles made the business stronger.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Dream Gruene Getaway is a boutique riverfront vacation rental brand located in the heart of Gruene, Texas, just steps from Gruene Hall and the historic district. We specialize in creating relaxed, memorable getaway experiences for families, couples, groups, and river lovers looking for more than just a place to stay.

What sets us apart is the combination of location, hospitality, and experience. Our two side-by-side riverfront condos offer direct Guadalupe River access, walkability to Gruene’s restaurants and live music, and a setup that works well for both small groups and larger gatherings. We’ve also focused heavily on thoughtful amenities — outdoor gathering spaces, river gear, kayaks, stand-up paddle boards, an optional golf cart rental, fire pits, grills, and little details that help guests feel at home.

One thing we’re especially proud of is the amount of repeat guests and word-of-mouth business we’ve built over the years. We’ve worked hard to create a brand that feels personal, welcoming, and authentic rather than just transactional. Many guests return year after year for vacations, celebrations, concerts, tubing trips, and family traditions, which means a lot to us.

At the end of the day, we want people to feel like they’ve discovered their own favorite riverside escape in Texas — a place where they can slow down, reconnect, and make lasting memories.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I think entrepreneurship naturally involves a certain level of risk-taking, especially in hospitality and real estate. You’re constantly making decisions without guarantees, whether it’s investing in a property, building a brand, adapting to market changes, or navigating economic uncertainty.

One of the biggest risks for me was transitioning from the restaurant industry into the vacation rental space and investing heavily into building Dream Gruene Getaway into more than just a rental property. We wanted to create a true guest experience and boutique-style brand, which meant taking risks on upgrades, amenities, marketing, and long-term vision.

At the same time, I don’t view risk-taking as being reckless. I believe in calculated risks doing your homework, trusting your instincts, surrounding yourself with good people, and being willing to adapt when challenges come up. Not every decision works perfectly, but I’ve learned that growth usually happens outside your comfort zone.

Looking back, many of the biggest opportunities and successes came from taking chances that felt uncomfortable at the time. If you believe in what you’re building and stay committed through the ups and downs, those risks can become some of the most rewarding decisions you make.
