Life & Work with Marisa Cunningham of National

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marisa Cunningham.

Hi Marisa, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
The Ballet Conservatory of South Texas was founded with a vision to provide exceptional ballet training while creating a supportive and inspiring environment where young dancers can grow both artistically and personally. Over the past two decades, the Conservatory has grown from a small local studio into a respected pre-professional training program serving students and families throughout the San Antonio community.

What makes our journey especially meaningful is that we have always believed ballet education should be about more than technical excellence alone. While we are deeply committed to high-quality classical training, we are equally focused on developing confidence, discipline, resilience, creativity, and character in every student who walks through our doors.

Over the years, the Conservatory has expanded its programs, performance opportunities, community outreach efforts, and scholarship support to make dance more accessible to a broader range of students. One of the most exciting milestones in our recent history was presenting our first full-length production of The Nutcracker for the San Antonio community, an achievement that reflected years of growth, dedication, and collaboration from students, faculty, families, and supporters.

Now in our 21st season, we continue to build on that foundation with a strong commitment to artistic excellence, youth development, and community impact. We are incredibly proud of the dancers, alumni, faculty, and families who have shaped the Conservatory into what it is today, and we remain passionate about inspiring the next generation through the art of ballet.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Like many arts organizations, our journey has come with its share of challenges. One of the most difficult periods was navigating the COVID-19 pandemic. During that time, many dance studios and arts organizations were forced to close their doors permanently. We were incredibly grateful to be able to continue serving our students and community through adaptability, determination, and the support of our families and faculty.

Beyond the pandemic, we have also faced the ongoing challenges that come with operating an arts organization in a highly competitive environment. Over the years, the number of dance programs in San Antonio has grown significantly, and arts organizations in general continue to face limitations in funding, visibility, and community support. Sustaining high-quality training while keeping programs accessible requires constant dedication and resourcefulness.

Despite those challenges, we have remained committed to our mission and have continued to grow and evolve. In many ways, those experiences strengthened our organization and reinforced the importance of providing a positive, disciplined, and inspiring environment for young dancers. We are proud to now be entering our 21st season and remain deeply committed to serving the San Antonio arts community for years to come.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
The Ballet Conservatory of South Texas specializes in providing high-quality classical ballet training in a supportive and nurturing environment. Our focus is not only on developing strong technical dancers, but also on helping students grow into confident, disciplined, and well-rounded individuals. We offer training for dancers of all ages and levels, with a strong emphasis on proper technique, artistry, performance experience, and personal growth.

One of the things we are most proud of is the sense of community and mentorship that exists within the Conservatory. We strive to create an environment where students feel challenged, encouraged, and inspired to reach their full potential, both inside and outside the studio. Many of our students have gone on to pursue professional dance opportunities, college dance programs, teaching careers, and leadership roles in their communities.

We are also incredibly proud of our esteemed faculty, whose experience, professionalism, and dedication help set the Conservatory apart. Our instructors bring a deep passion for ballet education and mentorship, creating an environment that emphasizes both artistic excellence and individualized support for each student.

In addition, community outreach and accessibility are an important part of our mission. Through outreach initiatives, scholarship opportunities, and community engagement efforts, we work to make ballet more accessible and to introduce the arts to students and families who may not otherwise have the opportunity to experience formal dance training. We believe the arts have the power to inspire, build confidence, and positively impact lives across the community.

What sets the Conservatory apart is our commitment to balancing excellence with heart. We believe rigorous ballet training and a positive, encouraging culture can and should coexist. Our faculty and leadership genuinely care about each student’s development, and we work hard to ensure every dancer feels seen, valued, and supported throughout their journey.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
One of the most important resources that guides our training is the Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet (CPYB) curriculum, which is widely respected for its emphasis on strong technical foundation, proper alignment, musicality, and dancer longevity. The Ballet Conservatory of South Texas is proud to be the only school in San Antonio that follows the CPYB curriculum and methodology.

This approach helps ensure that students receive developmentally appropriate training rooted in classical ballet principles while building strength, discipline, artistry, and consistency over time. The CPYB method has influenced generations of successful dancers and educators, and we believe it provides our students with an exceptional technical foundation while supporting healthy, sustainable training practices.

In addition to the curriculum itself, we are constantly inspired by the broader arts community, continuing education opportunities for faculty, and the dedication and passion of our students and families.
