Check Out Jennifer Lindberg’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Lindberg.

Hi Jennifer, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My husband Jim and I fell in love with an 1898 building in downtown Lockhart and decided to quit wedding photography and build something totally different in the world of studio photography: black and white portraits that feel less like snapshots and more like art.

Years before the studio, we adopted two toddlers and realized we had zero baby photos of them. That gut punch made everything personal. It’s also what made us obsessive about capturing the moments you can’t get back.

For me, photography was never just about pretty pictures. I spent years as a photojournalist, documenting Death Row inmates for the New York Times and teen birth mothers for Marie Claire, always drawn to the stories that weren’t being told loudly enough. When we opened the studio in 2018, I noticed something quietly heartbreaking: women were almost always behind the camera. Organizing everyone else’s memories. Disappearing from the visual records of their own lives.

So that became our mission, bringing women back into the frame. We now have a team of eight photographers, we’ve raised over $60,000 for nonprofits, and we draw clients from across Texas and beyond.

We also know firsthand, as parents to three kids–one fully grown Army MD and two teenagers–how fast time moves. We photograph women and families the way we wish everyone could be photographed: like the people in the frame are the most important subjects in the world. Because they are.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Honestly? People thought we were crazy. No one’s going to drive to Lockhart for portraits, they said. And for a minute, that doubt gets in your head.

But our clients proved them wrong. Most come from San Antonio and Austin, and word has spread further than we ever imagined. Just this past weekend we had clients drive in from Laredo and Houston. And in the past two months, our Play Like a Girl project has garnered national interest and been featured on the news in five cities across the US.

There’s a saying I carried with me through my photojournalism years: ‘Good work will out.’ I believed it then and I believe it now. If you do the work with integrity and heart, people find you. Lockhart is the BBQ capital of the world and one of Texas’s most exciting emerging arts destinations, and we’re proud to be right in the middle of it all.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We are a luxury portrait studio specializing in iconic black and white portraits of women. Female athletes, mothers and children, women and their dogs, and women 40 and beyond who are stepping boldly into a new era of their lives.

That last one is actually our newest project, ‘She’s in Her Era,’ celebrating women who are post-caretaking, deeper into their careers, and finally, truly knowing themselves. It’s already become one of the most meaningful things we’ve ever done.

We also have an ongoing fine art project called Woman’s Best Friend, where we photograph women who are deeply bonded with their dogs. We’ve exhibited 50 to 100 portraits at a time right here in our Lockhart studio, and it’s become something people look forward to every year.

And then there’s Play Like a Girl, our coffee table book featuring female athletes of all ages, with every dollar of book profits going to Kerr County flood relief and the Women in Sports Foundation.

What sets us apart is the experience as much as the art. Clients walk into a 1,500 square foot luxury studio with their own changing room, a salmon velvet sofa, a full length mirror, snacks, water, and music they actually love. We guide every session so nothing feels stiff or awkward. People tell us over and over how comfortable they felt and how much fun they had.
Then they order from home on Zoom, a white glove reveal experience where they see their portraits for the first time. We ask everyone to have Kleenex close by! Happy tears are basically part of the process.

They walk away with Italian fine art prints and contemporary B&W wall art that is timeless, works with every color and every style of home, and looks like it belongs in a gallery. And because everyone loves being able to share their portraits, we also offer digital collections, hand edited in our signature style. Because who doesn’t love a good social media moment?

We have over 400 verified five star reviews. That’s what we’re most proud of. Not just the art, but the way people feel from the moment they walk in to the moment they display something on their wall that finally shows them the way their people see them.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
People are getting tired of accumulating things. They want experiences that mean something. We hear it every week. Women walking in saying ‘I’ve been wanting to do this for years’ or ‘I finally stopped putting it off.’ People are ready to invest in moments that matter and art that lasts.

The cultural moment for women is also undeniable. Dove reached 100 million people at the Super Bowl with a message about girls quitting sports because of body image. Our Play Like a Girl Project is being featured on news stations across the country. Women’s visibility isn’t a niche conversation anymore. The tide is turning.

And then there’s Lockhart. People used to raise an eyebrow when we said we were building something here. Now it keeps getting featured as one of Texas’s most exciting emerging arts destinations, with established galleries and exciting new ones joining the scene, as well as Barb’s BBQ, Lockhart’s first women led restaurant with a female pitmaster, earning a James Beard nomination and Michelin Guide recognition and putting Lockhart on the national food map.

We feel lucky to be part of that story. And we think we’re just getting started
