Inspiring Conversations with Aponi Balderas of Surfaced Skin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Aponi Balderas.

Hi Aponi, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started in 2020 getting my esthetics license in Houston, TX. Once school started it really just clicked for me, and I knew I wanted to focus on being a Facialist. I moved back to San Antonio (where I’m originally from) in early 2021, this is when I began establishing clientele and spreading the word that I was newly licensed and ready to touch faces! By mid 2021, I was working on my own brand while also collaborating with a local skincare brand, getting hands on experience, setting up a skincare studio and creating facial protocols, marketing and everything in between. January 2023 is when I actually went solo and started working in a studio with my now business partner. We recently moved to Warehouse 5 located west of downtown on Buena Vista St. here we offer skincare, facials, lash lifts + waxing services.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As a small business owner nothing is ever smooth without it being a lil rocky! A struggle that really stands out to me in my journey is when I became licensed esthetics was not widely known, so it felt like a struggle explaining the world of skincare to those who were not really aware. Which is something that I’m very passionate about, everyone should have access to skincare to protect our bodies largest organ and the barrier that is protecting us daily.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Surfaced Skin is the name of my facial studio where I specialize in completely custom skincare treatments + routines. Every skin is different so I love to make sure your skin gets exactly what it needs the day of your visit. I treat acne prone skin, dark spots/pigmentation, sensitivity, and signs of aging. I’m most proud to offer skincare solutions to all skin colors and ethnicities. Its opened the doors for me to work with both woman and men, from medical professionals, business owners to NBA players.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I love to read blogs and magazines about the latest skincare products, treatments, ingredients and trends. This helps me stay up to date and in the know with what’s new in my industry.
