Today we’d like to introduce you to Jonathan Cohen.
Jonathan, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My story starts in Toronto, Canada (my hometown) where I earned my Master’s degree in Building Science (2010) and worked for a premier engineering design firm as part of their building envelope services group where assessing envelope and cladding designs and failures was part of the regular scope of services. From there I sought out a different side of the industry and gained valuable on site experience with a leading Custom home builder over the next 10 years. After gaining invaluable insight into the way homes are constructed I took the teachings and transited into mold and indoor air quality assessments at the beginning of 2024. I successfully owned and operated Air Quality Canada Inc even while moving to Austin, TX where I have since started up House of Thyme LLC where I continue to pursue residential mold investigations as a licensed Mold Assessment Consultant (MAC).
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Given we only officially launched our services in February 2026, we have been dealing with the natural start up ‘pains’ of establishing our name and brand to the community as a independent and integrity-driven company. Building community trust with a new company is very important to me especially in a city that is afflicted with the prevalence of mold growth in their homes and people who suffer greatly from mold-related illnesses.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Our work as mold inspectors and indoor air quality investigators starts with understanding building science principles; knowledges of how mold grows and spreads is on utmost importance and ultimately, where to look for it and how to resolve the issues.
As the owner, it is my role to set the standard for comprehensive investigations, diligent and clear reporting and provided homeowners with actionable steps forward. I specialize in being able to speak directly about complex issues about why buildings may “fail” or how our homes interact with’ the dynamic environments around it/us. I feel I am known to put my integrity ahead of anything. We are only as good as our word; that is the key to being successful and gaining the trust of the general public and homeowners. I am most proud of my combined academic and practice work experience that has set me on a path to reach this point where my history intersects; an advanced degree in building science, design and cladding failure experience, construction site exposure and now the testing and analysis side. This is what sets me apart from others that just want to do air sampling and don’t know how to look deeper into the issue.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Being empathetic is one of the keys to being successful. I truly feel for the client’s concerns, I make them know that their voices are heard and that their health concerns/struggles are validated especially when they are are not being recognized by a spouse, or family member.
