Today we’d like to introduce you to Lee & Lois Underwood Kristi Butler.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Back in 2017 the security company that Lee was working with suddenly decided to quit with notices going out to the venues but no notices to the officers. We made the decision to offer to buy the business and they accepted. We gave them a check (at the bank) for the amount agreed upon. The wife cashed the check and pocketed the cash. Deal done. We later found out that none of the guys got paid what was owed to them. We made a promise then and there that no one would have to wait on their payroll checks and no check would ever bounce. We reached out to the venues that we “inherited” and they accepted us. We had basically the same team that Lee had worked with (the best 5 of the group). From there we just grew because we are honest and have integrity. We have a simple plan that we stick with. We treat the officers and venues right and it all works out well. God is the head of our company and all our team knows it. They also know that, with us, family comes first. If you have a family emergency or even a family event, we will honor that and not expect you to work.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No business has a completely smooth road. Our bumps have mostly been with insurance companies. We legally cannot operate without insurance and so we start out 2 or 3 months in advance to get everything in order. The insurance companies will typically drag their heels until we are 2 days out of time to give us a quote (take it or leave it). This past year we were blessed to be introduced to a very fine person who farmed us out to a variety of companies and found us a policy that was almost half of what we had to pay last year. Because of his hard work, we were even, for the first time, able to afford to buy workman’s compensation and still come in under what we paid for just our liability policy last year.
We have not really had any major struggles other than that and maybe a few small scheduling issues that got worked out.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
We are a private security firm that provides security for all events that occur at the Gillespie County Fairgrounds in the next city over from us, also several wedding venues, many events at the Farm Bureau event center and at some of the halls that rent space out for events. We do not provide personal protection for celebrities or security for bars. We like our crew and don’t want to put them in harm’s way.
We are very proud of the fact that when the Solar Eclipse took place, NASA chose our team to provide security for their properties and equipment. Lee even has a picture of himself taken with Reid Wiseman (the astronaut who was part of the team to just complete a trip around the moon).
Everyone on our team has to be trained before they are turned loose to work solo. Lee has 17 years experience in the security field. He holds licenses up to level 4 (personal protection and armed), has completed and is licensed by the NRA to be a Handgun, Shotgun Law Enforcement Instructor. He also holds a license for a handgun instructor and range instructor by the NRA. Lois and Kristi are both level 2 officers (unarmed).
We have quarterly training in active shooter reaction and protection, CPR/AED first aid and personal protection for our team. We are proud to say that every person on our team is considered a professional because of the training we provide.
What matters most to you?
Our professionalism and intregrity and the fact that we treat everyone with the same courtesy and respect that we would like from them.
