Check Out Converse Animal Shelter Inc’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Converse Animal Shelter Inc.

Hi Converse, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
The Converse Animal Shelter Inc. was started as a No-Kill shelter in 1978, by a group of mazing individuals who were led by two amazing lady’s named Jo Rene Von Voorhis whom everyone called Joey and Frances Thoraton. We moved to our current location after getting land donated by George Ammeman and incorporated in 1982. Shortly after Francis passed away Dottie Dallas joined the Borde of Directors, and with the help of our amazing community Dottie and Joey grew the shelter to where it is today. Has grateful has we are to Joey and Dottie we are just has grateful if not more to the people/community that supports us! We would not currently be where we are today without them.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Just like any business we have our ups and downs. The biggest struggle we have are finding people to adopt, donate, and volunteer.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
The basics of our work is to take care of any animals that come through our gate sick or healthy. I believe we are known for how much we love and care for our animals that come into our care. we treat them has if they are our own pets…. some would say a little too much. The thing that’s sets us apart from others is our willingness to give any/all animals a second chance at life. The thing we are most proud of is that we were the first now kill-shelter in the San Antonio area and since our conception over 35,000 helpless, abandoned, unwanted, sick, and lost animals have come through our gates.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
No matter how hard you try to we can not save them all.
