Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Phallon Doss.
Hi Dr. Phallon, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Opening Doss Audiology & Hearing Center in 2013 was both a professional leap and a personal one. My husband graduated from Samuel Clemens High School in Schertz, and I graduated from Judson High School in Converse, so this community has always been home for us. When I realized there was a significant gap in hearing healthcare in the area, I knew I didn’t want to build a practice just anywhere — I wanted to build it here.
My passion for hearing healthcare actually started long before I opened the doors. I took four years of American Sign Language in high school and became fluent in ASL, which deepened my connection to the Deaf and hard-of-hearing community. I originally planned to become a Teacher of the Deaf, but along the way I discovered audiology — and it felt like the perfect intersection of science, technology, and meaningful one-on-one patient care. That combination of analytical problem-solving and deeply personal interaction was exactly where I belonged.
Before opening the practice, I gained experience in private practice, neurotology, and electrophysiology in surgical settings. That background allowed me to bring comprehensive, expert-level hearing care to Schertz as the first Doctor of Audiology serving this community.
In 2017, after recognizing another unmet need, we opened a second clinic location in Floresville — and we remain the only hearing doctors serving Wilson County. What began as a single-provider practice has grown into two locations with four audiologists, two audiology assistants, and four incredible support staff members.
Looking back, I see a journey rooted in community, service, and a genuine love for helping people hear and connect more fully with the world around them.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely has not been a smooth road — but I don’t think any meaningful journey ever is. Starting a business from scratch is hard. There’s no shortcut around the long hours, the financial risk, the self-doubt, and the constant decision-making that comes with building something from nothing.
When I opened the practice, my daughter was just one year old. Then, only a year after opening our doors, I had my son. So in the earliest stages of the business — when every system was new and every patient in the door was hard fought — I was also navigating life with two babies at home. Balancing a growing family and a growing business was one of the biggest challenges I’ve faced. There were seasons of exhaustion and moments where I questioned whether I could truly do both well.
As the practice expanded, a different challenge emerged: building the right team. Finding people who not only have the clinical skillset but also share the heart, integrity, and patient-first mindset that define Doss Audiology & Hearing Center has never been easy. Hiring is one of the most important decisions a business owner makes — and sometimes the hardest lessons come from getting it wrong before getting it right.
But every challenge shaped us. The early struggles forced me to build strong systems. Motherhood made me more empathetic and efficient. Team-building challenges clarified our culture and values. I truly wouldn’t change any of it, because those obstacles are what strengthened both me and the practice. The road hasn’t been smooth — but it has absolutely been worth it.
We’ve been impressed with Doss Audiology & Hearing Center , but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
At Doss Audiology & Hearing Center, we are a locally owned, independent hearing healthcare practice built around one core belief: patients deserve comprehensive, expert-level hearing care delivered with integrity and heart.
We provide full-scope audiology services for both children and adults, including diagnostic evaluations, hearing aids, tinnitus management, and medical collaboration with ENT and primary care providers. Pediatrics has always been especially close to my heart. Not every audiologist chooses to work with children, but we intentionally built our practice to serve families — from newborns to grandparents — so patients don’t have to travel outside their community for specialized care.
One thing that truly sets us apart is that we are audiologist-owned and provider-centered. Ownership working in the clinic every day allows us to prioritize ethical recommendations, best-practice protocols, and patient relationships.
We are also proud to be the first Doctor of Audiology practice established in Schertz and remain the only hearing doctors serving Wilson County. What began as one location has grown to two clinics, four audiologists, two audiology assistants, and a strong support team — yet we’ve worked intentionally to maintain a warm, community-focused feel.
Brand-wise, I’m most proud that people associate us with trust. Many of our new patients come from word-of-mouth referrals — families, physicians, teachers, and friends who send the people they care about to us. That reputation means everything.
If readers take away one thing, I hope it’s this: hearing healthcare is not just about devices — it’s about connection, communication, and quality of life. Our brand is built on helping people reconnect to the moments that matter most.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I do believe luck has played a role in my life and business — but maybe not in the way people typically think about it. Many of my biggest opportunities have come from being in the right place at the right time. At the same time, I strongly believe that luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.
A great example is the opening of our second location. Some might call that luck. A local ENT in Wilson County began noticing the quality and thoroughness of our reports for his patients. We had never directly marketed to him or requested a meeting. Instead, he reached out to us. He shared that there was a significant lack of quality hearing healthcare in Wilson County and encouraged us to consider expanding there.
On the surface, that feels like being “discovered.” But the reality is, we were only on his radar because we were already doing the work well. Our commitment to detailed diagnostic testing, clear physician communication, and exemplary report-writing positioned us for that opportunity long before we knew it existed.
So yes, I’ve experienced good fortune. But I think what people call luck is often the byproduct of quiet preparation, strong relationships, and doing the right thing repeatedly — even when no one is watching.
