Exploring Life & Business with Tiffany Johnson of Big Back Butter Cake

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tiffany Johnson.

Hi Tiffany, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Big Back Butter Cake started with a simple birthday gift for my mother. I knew how much she loved butter cake, so I wanted to make something thoughtful and personal. I found a recipe online, but after testing it, I felt it could be so much more flavorful. I kept tweaking and refining until I landed on the Vanilla Butter Cake we still serve today.

After tasting it, my father requested a chocolate version for his birthday. I assumed it would be as easy as swapping vanilla for chocolate, but I quickly learned that chocolate is its own science. No recipes I found online matched what I had in mind, so I used my Vanilla Butter Cake recipe as the foundation and experimented until I created the Chocolate Butter Cake.

I started sharing the cakes with friends, and their reactions were the first signs that I might be onto something. When someone offered to pay for a cake, it clicked that this could be more than a hobby. The barrier to entry was low, so I decided to give it a try. What began as a birthday gift became a creative outlet outside of my 9–5 and ultimately the foundation of Big Back Butter Cake.

My approach to cake is rooted in my love for simple pleasures. I serve my butter cakes plain, without icing, so people can enjoy the pure flavor or top it however they like. It’s all about a tender, flavorful slice that can stand on its own.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The journey has actually been really pleasant for me. I think a big part of that is the peace I’ve felt throughout the process. I’ve had other businesses before, but this is the first time I’ve been intentional about inviting God into every part of it, and I truly feel His presence guiding me. Even when things don’t go to my plan, I am reassured that it is a part of His plan, which ultimately relieves any pressure I would put on myself to achieve certain results.

The biggest challenge has definitely been time management. It can be tough to balance my responsibilities and give each area of my life the attention it deserves. But even that is a blessing. I’m grateful that the “struggle” is simply having more opportunities than hours in the day.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Big Back Butter Cake is a small cottage bakery based in San Antonio, specializing in tender, deeply flavorful butter cakes.
The cakes aren’t decorated and are served plain, that way, you can enjoy however you like: warm with coffee, topped with ice cream, etc.

Every cake starts with local ingredients sourced from fellow small business owners, careful recipe testing, and a commitment to getting the texture just right.

What we’re known for is simplicity done exceptionally well. This stems from my own childhood memories of scraping icing off cakes just to get to the good part. I wanted to create a dessert that didn’t need anything extra to be satisfying.

What sets Big Back Butter Cake apart is the intention behind it. I develop every recipe myself, starting from scratch, sourcing local specialty ingredients and refining until it feels true to the brand. I

I’m proud that people recognize the butter cakes for their texture and flavor.
