Today we’d like to introduce you to Sheryl Sachtleben.
Sheryl, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I am originally from Houston and moved to San Marcos where I received my bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and a master’s degree in public administration. I worked at Guadalupe County Juvenile Probation for 10 years then founded Seguin Youth Services in 1995 which is a neighborhood based prevention program that helps kids achieve at school and stay out of trouble. I began serving as our Justice of the Peace, Pct. 2 and enjoy both hats that I wear in our community.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road is never smooth but every struggle ends with a success. Ensuring funding for a grassroots project for 30 years has certainly been difficult but I know we have survived the hardest of times.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My God-given talent is working with kids to encourage a different path than what they are exposed to. I am also a judge and I am most proud of our residents entrusting me to serve them. I am a hard worker that never sits down. I can be extremely organized or completely off the wall goofy. I tend to love everyone and I think people would say that I’m always there for them and willing to go over and beyond to help. And it’s is always more rewarding for me than anyone I have helped.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I’m not in an industry. I just hope my nonprofit lives forever and my voters continue to allow me to serve for many more years.
