Meet Paul Colavecchia of Apex Deck Co

Today we’d like to introduce you to Paul Colavecchia.

Paul, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was born in Detroit, Michigan. From an early age I grew up working and helping out in construction, as my dad and my uncle were both carpenters. After graduating High School in 2006, i wasn’t sure what I wanted to do, so I joined the local carpenters union while also in school part time. After finishing the 4 year apprenticeship program through the union, I went back to school to get my degree in business management. Shortly after, I was offered a job in Houston, TX to help manage and do sales for a painting company. Then I was offered a job in San Antonio to work for a full remodeling company and I have been in San Antonio ever since. I started my first company in 2018 doing home remodels and later integrated decks and outdoor projects. A few years later I wanted to take a step back from ownership and just enjoy life, so I sold my company. I started doing sales for the same company and just focusing on myself and my home life. This year, my wife and I decided to get back into the thick of it and opened up Apex Deck Co.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Being a small business owner is almost never a smooth road. You start to doubt your abilities and you ask yourself “am I cut out for this? Do I have any idea of what I’m doing?” at least once or twice a day, especially at the beginning. Starting a business is a blind leap of faith and you just have to hope that you can land on your feet. You have to be overly self-disciplined and really make sure that you are doing everything that needs to be done because no one is going to help bail you out if things gets hairy. This journey has been especially difficult because both my wife and I dedicated our entire lives to this business, we are full-time Apex Deck Co employees and we have been from the start. I’ve realized that fully committing to something like starting a business from the ground up is an uphill battle every morning, you have to have the grit and determination to wake up and know that you are putting your everything into your business. It’s a financial and emotional rollercoaster and I have simultaneously loved and hated every second of it, and honestly, I wouldn’t change a thing. At the end of the day, I like being responsible for myself and my family. I like having full control over my own life and being a business owner is the best way I can accomplish that.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Apex Deck Co?
Apex Deck Co is a family owned and operated outdoor construction company. We tackle projects like decks, patio covers, screen rooms, pergolas, etc. We pride ourselves on our consistent communication with our customers, our solid core values as a family owned business, our ability to work with each customers ideas and budget to give them a fully custom project that they can enjoy for years to come, and treating each and every customer like a member of the family.

How do you think about luck?
I wouldn’t call myself a “luck” person. I think the universe hands everyone the cards and we have to choose how we want to play them. I like to view every situation as a long term ordeal. It’s not, what do I do with this situation for the next week, it’s how is this going to impact my life in the next 10 years and how do I make sure I come out of this on top. It’s not bad luck or good luck, it’s just life and you get to choose how to feel and what to do about it. I’m also a very one hurdle at a time kind of guy. If i get presented with an opportunity or an obstacle, I focus on that one thing instead of trying to hurdle everything at once.
