Conversations with Frida Casas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Frida Casas.

Hi Frida, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been rescuing animals for as long as I can remember. As a kid, I was always bringing home stray cats and dogs (even when I was told to put them back!), and not much has changed since — my home is still full of little furry angels. It’s truly been my lifelong dream to open an animal rescue.

Today, I’m working alongside an incredible team to make that dream a reality through Casa Xolo Foundation. We officially launched this year and are currently operating as a foster-based rescue while we search for the right property to call home. In the meantime, we go out and care for our strays by bringing them food, love, and medical attention when needed.

I want to note though, that Casa Xolo won’t be your typical animal rescue. Our mission is deeply rooted in community and culture. In the current social and political climate, we believe it’s more important than ever to unite and uplift the BIPOC community. There is power in connection — and celebrating our heritage is a form of resistance. That’s why a goal of mine is to have Casa Xolo host community events that bring people together through animals, nature, and culture, creating a space where everyone feels connected and inspired.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. There are the logistical challenges, of course — finding the right property to build our rescue, recruiting strong and dedicated board members, and navigating all the details that come with launching a new nonprofit.

But the hardest part, without a doubt, is the emotional side of rescue work. Seeing animals who’ve experienced severe neglect or abuse is heartbreaking. You can see the pain and fear in their eyes, and it’s especially difficult when we’re too late to help.

What keeps me going is the transformation we do get to witness — seeing a once-broken animal heal, trust again, and light up with joy to see a friendly face. Watching them finally live the happy, full lives they deserve makes every challenge worth it.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?

What are your plans for the future?
Our next big step is to settle into our new property and start bringing our full vision to life. We’re looking forward to recruiting passionate volunteers, expanding our foster network, and building out the rescue space we’ve always dreamed of.

Beyond that, we’re excited to host more community events that connect people through animals, culture, and heritage — creating a space where both people and pets can find healing, belonging, and joy.
