Meet Uzoma Obah of TruHaven Dental Center of Live Oak

Today we’d like to introduce you to Uzoma Obah.

Hi Uzoma, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’m Dr. Uzoma Obah, though my friends and family call me Uzor. Professionally, I go by Dr. Obah. I was born and raised in Nigeria in a close and loving family. I’m the fourth of five children. My dad, a civil engineer, ran his own firm, and my mom, who studied biology, owns a school. They both worked hard and taught us the value of integrity, perseverance, and strong family ties. Those lessons have shaped who I am today and how I raise my own family.
I knew I wanted to be a doctor from a tender age as I always found joy in helping people feel better however, I was not sure what type of doctor I wanted to be as I also enjoyed arts and working with my hands. I liked drawing and creating things. And then I discovered dentistry when my older siblings had to visit the dentist for a tooth ache. I learned that dentistry combines art and science in a way that allows you to use creativity and skill to help people not only feel confident about their smiles but also maintain healthy mouths—because oral health is such an important part of overall health. That was the moment I knew I had found my calling. By combining my artistic skills with scientific knowledge, I was well on my way to create beautiful, functional, healthy smiles to enhance my people’s overall well-being.
I received my first dental degree from the School of Dentistry, University of Benin. I graduated in March 2006 as the best student in my class in the Department of Preventive Dentistry. Afterward, I practiced for three years, providing care to underserved communities as well as in modern urban clinics. Those experiences deepened my commitment to making high-quality, evidence-based dental care accessible to everyone. My passion for learning led me to New York University College of Dentistry where I received my second dental degree. I graduated in 2015 with honors in Special Patient Care. I was also inducted into the Omicron Kappa Upsilon Honor Society for academic excellence, ranking among the top 12% of my class.
Since graduating I have gone on to work in different dental settings. From community health care setting to Corporate dental offices and Private practice settings. This has given me the opportunity to work with a diverse range of patients and cases, allowing me to refine my expertise as a Clinician and provide personalized care to my patients.
With the incredible support of my husband, I eventually decided to open my own practice, TruHaven Dental Center. Our vision is simple: to be a trusted partner in our patients’ lifelong oral health journey by crafting smiles and cultivating trust. We take a patient-centered approach and strive to create a calm, welcoming environment, because comfort is such an important part of good dental care.
Outside of Dentistry, I am a wife and mom of two amazing kids. I am a bit of a fashion enthusiast. I enjoy exploring our lovely city as well as visiting new cities. My Christian faith is at the heart of everything I do. It keeps me grounded and reminds me daily to lead with kindness, humility, and gratitude.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My journey has had its share of challenges, but it has also revealed strength I didn’t know I had and the beauty of the community that surrounded me through it all. When I look back on my path, I see more than a career in dentistry. I see a story of faith, perseverance, and grace.
Becoming a dentist wasn’t easy. I went through dental school twice, first in my home country and later at NYU college of Dentistry, one of the most demanding programs in the world. Studying as an international student in a city that was completely new to me came with many obstacles. There were long nights, difficult exams, and moments of doubt, but I stayed focused on why I started in the first place: to serve, to heal, and to bring confidence to every smile.
Then, just three months after opening my private practice, my life changed again. I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Overnight, I had to balance building a new business with fighting for my health. It was overwhelming at times, but my faith became my anchor. My husband was by my side through every treatment, every hard day, and every prayer. His love, along with the support of my family, friends, colleagues, and my community, helped me find the courage to keep going.
That season taught me lessons that no classroom ever could. It taught me the importance of resilience, rest, and compassion. It deepened my understanding of what it means to care for others, not just as patients, but as people. My personal experience has given me a unique perspective and empathy, allowing me to provide more effective care and support to others.

We’ve been impressed with TruHaven Dental Center of Live Oak, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am the Owner of TruHaven Dental Center a general dental practice built from both vision and heart. I wanted to create more than a dental office. I wanted to create a space where people feel safe, understood, and genuinely cared for.
Our logo shows a tooth resting in the palm of a hand. It represents our promise that your smile is safe with us. At TruHaven, we welcome patients of all ages, from the very first tooth to the wisest smiles. We provide everything from exams, cleanings, and fillings to crowns, root canals, dentures, and Invisalign. But what truly makes our practice special is the atmosphere. We’ve designed it to feel calm and comforting, with small touches like cozy blankets, lip balm, headphones, and a coffee bar. It’s a modern space, but it feels like home. It is a Haven, where all our patients feel empowered to prioritize their self care and oral health.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
San Antonio is a vibrant city with a rich cultural heritage. I love that it is very family oriented. It is a big city with a small town feel. There is something to do for both the outdoor enthusiasts and the homebody.

Right now, what I like the least is the non stop constructions but I am excited to see the end results.

Pricing:

  • Zoom whitening at $299 special
  • New patient exams at $69
