Inspiring Conversations with Margaux Huckabay of Hat Bar

Today we’d like to introduce you to Margaux Huckabay.

Margaux, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Before the pandemic, Margaux went to Round Top, Texas, and saw a hat pop-up. She wondered why there wasn’t a hat bar in San Antonio — after all, we have the Stock Show and Rodeo, and everyone loves a good hat! So she reached out to her friend Jana and literally said, “Let’s start a hat bar!” And that’s how Hat Bar began three years ago.

What sets us apart from other hat bars is that we carry hats for women, men, and even children. Margaux also attended hat school, where she learned how to shape hats and even create them from scratch — literally from a beaver felt hat body into a finished hat — pouncing and sewing each one herself.

Hat Bar also carries custom patch boots, bolo ties, and more. From cowboy hats to visors, Hat Bar has it all. We started in a small space on Broadway and have now moved into a larger location down the road at 7726 Broadway.

We have regular retail hours, but we also attend plenty of off-site events — from intimate gatherings of six people to large-scale events with thousands. We have a great team, and we love meeting people and having fun!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Honestly, it’s been a smooth road. We’ve been really blessed and lucky. The only obstacles we’ve had to navigate were price increases due to tariffs. Even though all of the hats we carry in-store are made in the U.S., many of the materials used to make them — like beaver felts and other textiles — come from other countries, since they’re not commonly produced in the United States.

I feel like we were able to navigate this well. We care deeply about quality, so we didn’t want to bring in cheaper hats just to make more money. Instead, we kept our prices the same and continued offering high-quality hats.

As you know, we’re big fans of Hat Bar. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
We are a custom hat bar with both a retail location and a traveling hat bar. We can travel any distance, and we’ve done events ranging from six people to literally two thousand. We customize hats for men, women, and children, as well as create true custom hats — made specifically for your head and head shape — from felt hat bodies. We truly have a hat for everyone, at all price points.

What sets us apart is that we always strive to be better and love to learn. We’re constantly expanding our knowledge about hat shapes, the history of hats, and sourcing the perfect materials and accessories. We’ve attended hat school, embroidery classes, and more — always finding fun extras to add to the experience.

We also make custom fire-branded logos for companies and can bring any idea to life. We offer hats, bolos, brandable leather goods, and more. Margaux has a background in PR, social media, and events — so believe me when I say we love an event, and we love a party! We always make sure to include those small details, and that’s what truly sets us apart. No one makes a prettier bow on a hat than Jana, and no one brings those extra special touches to an event like Margaux!

Any big plans?
We just moved into our larger space and celebrated our grand opening in June — that was a big milestone for us! We had been searching for the perfect spot. Now, we’re looking forward to meeting even more customers, getting to know them, and creating the perfect hat for each one.

We hope to be part of more events, travel to new places, and maybe — just maybe — start a custom boot company too. We dream big and are always thinking about how we can make the experience even more special! We love creating fun, memorable experiences for everyone — from letting the little ones pick out charms for their hats, to crafting the perfect hat for a gentleman, to making a woman’s hat extra meaningful by tracing her late father’s signature onto it.

We’ll always go the extra mile to make sure this is an experience you’ll remember forever. We love being memory makers — probably because we’re both moms and treat our store like our baby.

  • Hats in the store begin at $165 and go to $265 depending on hat and package
