Inspiring Conversations with Greg Kara of Mobile Motorcycle Repair of San Antonio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Greg Kara.

Hi Greg, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
After working at a local dealership as a technician for several years, in 2009 I was let go, due to cut backs. I had difficulty finding a new job and had apply for unemployment benefits. During my job hunt, I started advertising motorcycle repair services on Craigslist. At the time, I had a small single bedroom apartment, a broke down car, and a motorcycle. Whenever I would get repair jobs, I would load my tools into a backpack and ride my motorcycle to the customer’s home to do the repair. As business grew, I was able to buy a small truck so I could bring all the tools I needed to get the jobs done. Over the last 16 years, business has grown, we currently have three vans servicing the San Antonio area, we have a very high ranking on Google Business reviews, and we recently had an opportunity to partner with Harley-Davidson and travel with them to a local motorcycle rally to do repairs, fluid changes, and tire installs on site at the event. We continue to learn new ways to better serve the motorcycle community and grow the business.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The first few years of business were not very successful and I was struggling to pay my bills. There were several other people offering the same service that I was so there was some competition I had to compete with. Also, I was in a pretty bad motorcycle accident in 2017, in which I broke my collarbone so I was unable to work for about a month or so which caused a setback. I had to deal with the loss of my father in 2015.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Mobile Motorcycle Repair of San Antonio?
We offer on site motorcycle repairs. Some of the services we offer include tire installs, carburetor rebuilds, brake jobs, suspension repair, electrical repair, and diagnostics. Another thing that sets us apart from other shops is the fact that I myself have 22 years of experience as a motorcycle technician so pretty much any obstacle we encounter is something that I have already dealt with in the past and am prepared to handle.
Being able to bring the shop to our customers homes allows them peace of mind because their motorcycle never needs to leave their site, they don’t need to worry about some mechanic taking it for a joyride or abusing it in any way, they also don’t need to hire a tow truck to transport their motorcycle to a repair shop, and with the money we save on overhead, we are able keep our pricing low so the customers get the same quality work, perform at their home at an affordable rate.

Any big plans?
Our current operation seems to be working really well for us and our customers. We actually have customers who have been using our services since we opened, 16 years ago. We have had the opportunity to grow with our loyal customers and learn from them just as much as they learned from us. I got other people come to me and ask if I would like to start a shop with them but the mobile service really seems to be what sets us apart and there’s no sense in changing something that works. In the future we may get a few more vans and perhaps expand our service area to some surrounding cities.
