Conversations with Kyle Ferris

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kyle Ferris.

Hi Kyle, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Cedar Ridge Range has been in continuous business since March of 1997 as a Sporting Clays and rifle/pistol gun range. Since that time, we have doubled in size with several steel plate bays, machine gun rentals and an archery range. We also have a fully stocked gunshop with ammo, reloading supplies and gunsmithing.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
We believe that we run the safest shooting range possible. To that end, we have had unique range rules from the beginning that are designed to allow the most freedom while shooting but in a safe fashion. Some people don’t like them, however we believe in running the safest range possible which means sometimes we can’t accommodate everyone.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I have been at Cedar Ridge Range for almost 30 years now. We are still a family-owned business, however most of the family has retired so I spend a lot of time teaching employees about range procedures and firearm related knowledge. Being here so long, many customers look for me when they have a firearm or related question which I enjoy fielding because I have wasted lots of time and money at this stuff, so it’s always nice when I can save someone some money and/or hassle. I have also been gunsmithing most of my life and working at a shooting range has allowed me to see many, many products fail or succeed as well as their fixes.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
Treating people with respect, letting customers know we value their business and always improving the range experience so everyone feels welcome at CRR. Another important lesson if you manage a shooting range, DO NOT RUN OUT OF AMMO.
