Meet Jenny Maldonado of Northwest/Medical Center

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenny Maldonado.

Jenny Maldonado

Hi Jenny, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started with the idea that i would make polymer clay earrings but then I saw some tiktoks for decorated cookies and thought ohh that looks like more fun so i switched over and didnt look back but instead of the royal icing cookies i was seeing everywhere i decided to be different and do buttercream!! Then a couple years later after saying id never make cakes a friend needed a bday cake so that was my gift to her and from there i just started getting more orders so now i do more cakes than cookies! and i have really grown to love it!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has definitely had its ups and downs. i do a lot of research in anything i do so i read early on that it takes a good year to get consistent orders and that was sooo true for me! the first year i had maybe 2 orders a month sometimes 1 or none but i hung in and finally at one year it really picked up and i am consistently filling orders now.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a baker primarily cakes and cookies but i also make other treats and crafts too. Im not really sure if im more known for my cakes or cookies but those that taste my cookies always love them! I use a shortbread cookie with buttercream icing and thats what sets me apart. i can still create the beautiful cookies but they taste amazing!

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I’m lucky my husband works hard so i had time to slowly grow and learn. And the fact that i didnt ever plan to sell cakes but made one as a gift and just started getting orders from there was pretty lucky.
