Hi Amanda , can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My journey into the trades started most unexpectedly…as a frustrated customer. For years, my husband Kirk and I had our fair share of disappointing experiences with home service companies. We were the customers who got overcharged, overlooked, or left waiting all day for someone who never showed. And as new homeowners and parents, we realized just how broken that experience was.
After having our son, Bradley, I started thinking deeply about what kind of example I wanted to set, both for him and for myself. I’d built a career in marketing and communications, helping brands earn trust and connect with people. Kirk had spent years leading large operations and managing teams. When we started talking about “what’s next,” it hit us: what if we used our superpowers together to be the change we wanted to see in the HVAC industry?
That’s when we found One Hour Heating & Air Conditioning, part of Authority Brands, the largest home services organization in the U.S. We instantly connected with their values and commitment to quality, and we decided to go all in. We opened the doors to our One Hour Heating & Air Conditioning of San Antonio in April 2025, determined to raise the standard for what home comfort and customer care should feel like.
As a woman-owned business in the trades, I’m passionate about breaking old stereotypes to show that leadership, empathy, and excellence can coexist beautifully in this industry and in my city. Our mission is simple: to make homes feel safe, respected, and comfortable again. And we’re doing it one home, one conversation, and one yellow van at a time.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Of course not. It’s been anything but smooth. I’m learning a new industry, building a new business, and doing it together as a married couple while raising a toddler and navigating real life of aging parents, long days, and all the unpredictable things that come with both family and entrepreneurship. It’s been a crash course in balance, patience, and grace.
One of the biggest challenges early on was building the right team. Finding people I could personally trust and people I’d feel comfortable having in my home and in our customers’ homes was harder than I expected. In this business, character matters more than skill. I’ve learned to hire slow and fire fast, and to protect the culture we’re building at all costs. Our goal isn’t just to grow. It’s to grow with integrity.
And as a woman coming into the trades from outside the industry, I’ve had a lot to prove, both to myself and to others. I decided early on that I wasn’t just going to “run the business” from behind the scenes; I wanted to truly understand the work. So I’m taking crash courses in HVAC 101, joining vendor trainings, and starting to work toward certification so I can not only talk the talk but walk the walk one day. That’s been empowering and it’s made me a better leader, a better communicator, and a stronger advocate for women who want to take up space in something new. We do and learn hard things everyday!
