Today we’d like to introduce you to Joe Skelton.
Hi Joe, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Born in San Antonio, moved out West to Del Rio while in Elementary School. Born premature, at birth, and missing left hand, that what some may call a hardship has shaped the man I am today. Throughout my young adult life, I was bullied and told I couldn’t do things other people could. From a young age I was on a mission to prove everyone wrong, at 21 years old I became a Deputy Sheriff in South Texas, where I served over a decade in that Capacity. Currently, I still remain in a public service capacity with the great State of Texas for over ten years now. What got me started in the fencing industry is High School trades classes. My teachers were absolutely wonderful and always pushed me to do the best I could. After High School I worked for a friend who build fences and metal structures, and after nearly a year gaining that experience, I started my own business. It was very difficult in the beginning that led me to needing a full-time job to support my goal of owning a business, so I was happily introduced into public service to finance my dream. Fast forward 25 years later, I am still in public service, halfway in on earning a bachelor’s degree, and operating a successful business. I couldn’t have done it without God, family, and amazing employees.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I would be scared if every milestone in my life went smooth. I learned so many life lessons by failing but never gave up bettering myself and the business. When I started having conversations with God, praying for my family, business, and employees, I saw blessings after blessings. I remember times of my bank account overdrawn, still needing funds to operate the business, I had thoughts of giving up, but giving up was never in my plan. I pushed significantly harder to create my own brand, my style, the ways I was able to connect with the customers, giving it my very best to push through hard times. My number one priority is my employees get paid before I do. I’m not supporting just one employee; I’m supporting his or her family as well.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
First and foremost, God, family and my employees are the reason behind the success of this fencing company. Without them, I wouldn’t be at the point I am at today. My wife is definitely my biggest supporter, she keeps me motivated and moving forward. We specialize in all types of fencing, commercial, residential, and ranch. We also construct metal structures for backyards, farms, and ranches. In 2026 we are planning to add a tiny-home and barndominium fabrication dedicated crew. The relationship I have with clients is key, I believe in transparent pricing, and ensuring they receive the best quality work possible. I am blessed to have many clients scattered around Texas, and with Gods blessings, Skelton Fencing will be a household name in the entire state. I am proud to expand this business with tiny home and barndo building, knowing when we build steel structures, they are there for a lifetime.
So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
A rule that I live by, never bad talk competitors, they are working hard just like you to make a living. I enjoy sharing my knowledge with others, I have helped former employees start their own businesses. Success comes with having integrity, and having love and compassion towards others, no matter how different they may be than you. I get calls and emails constantly about the services I provide, and those initial calls usually end up being lifelong contacts, some who are mentors to me. I was once asked,”Joe, what kind of legacy do you want to leave behind?” Well, if I left more smiles than frowns on those around me, I am doing pretty good at life. Stay humble!
