Today we’d like to introduce you to Shari Reynolds.
Hi Shari, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Travel has always been at the heart of my life. I started out at Dell, then spent more than 30 years running my own high-tech and digital marketing agency in Austin and Mexico. Over time, my work began to focus more and more on the hospitality world, especially helping boutique hotels in Mexico tell their stories and connect with travelers.
San Miguel de Allende, Mexico eventually became home for 18 years, where I ran a travel site called Explore & Go Mexico and digtal marketing agency. Those years deepened my love for exploring new places and showed me just how powerful travel can be in bringing people joy, connection, and perspective.
In the summer of 2025, I opened Wanderers Retreat House here in Comfort, Texas. It’s my way of weaving together everything I’ve learned—hospitality, storytelling, and a lifelong passion for travel—into a warm, welcoming space.
Wanderers isn’t just a guest house; it’s also a place for gathering. I host retreats and workshops, and I lead guided tours both here in the Texas Hill Country and back to Mexico, where my own journey as a wanderer really took root.
For me, travel is more than movement—it’s about slowing down, discovering new perspectives, and finding joy in the journey. That’s the spirit I hope to share with everyone who walks through the door.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
When I moved to Mexico, I thought I was just changing locations—but really, I was stepping into a whole new way of life. Running a tech company from a small town in Mexico came with plenty of challenges: shaky internet in the early days, teaching people new technologies from scratch, navigating cultural differences, and learning Spanish later in life. There were also the realities of working in tourism—how economics and world events could change everything overnight. And as a woman in the technology field, I often had to carve out my own space at the table.
But those struggles were also gifts. They taught me resilience, patience, and the importance of community. They pushed me to grow in ways I never could have imagined and deepened my love of connecting with people across cultures.
What’s next?
Now that my guest house is open for business, I plan to add one more studio apartment and workshops and events in 2025. The first workshop is a Street Photography workshop December 8-12 with photographer Michael Amici. I will also be taking small groups on insider trips to San Miguel de Allende and San Cristobal de las Casas in the spring of 2026.
