Meet Tonya Markham of QA Accounting & Tax Service

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tonya Markham.

Hi Tonya, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I moved to San Antonio, TX in August of 2005 to start a fresh new life for my family. I grew up as a military brat and had moved all over the world. There had never been anywhere I lived more than 4 years. As I began my life here I enrolled at UTSA to get my degree in Accounting. We started attending CBC (Community Bible Church) and began very involved in all the wonderful programs. I was singing in the choir and helping in the children’s ministry as my daughter was in Kids choir. I started full time schedule at UTSA in Jan 2006 and by Easter my husband decided to leave my two children and I alone here in a new city with no family or friends for support.

I decided to continue my education and get my degree to take care of my son (in middle school eighth grade his 7th school) and daughter (5th grade her 5th school). I had family (my parents) in California but, as an only child I was pretty much on my own. Since we had already moved around so much I decided to figure it out.

I continued to make friends and dig in to my life at CBC as well as finish at UTSA. I completed my Bachelor of Business in Accounting in December of 2008 with honors as a member of Beta Alpha Psi. I began homeschooling my daughter only while starting my accounting business. I finished my first Master’s degree in Pastoral counseling in 2010 and my second Master’s in Accounting in 2012.

I have continued to use my business to give back to small businesses and tax clients that may not be able to afford a traditional CPA firm an the fees they charge. I do my best to support them and train them to handle the daily transactions on their own and help with any tax matters and questions they have.

My children have both completed their college degrees. My son has his Bachelor’s in Anthropology with a minor in sociology. My daughter received her Bachelor’s in Psychology and her masters in family counseling. She has since began working for my business since she recently had my granddaughter and needed a more flexible schedule to stay home with her.

I have fallen in love with San Antonio and have happily become a permanent resident. It has been truly a blessing with the support of the church and this amazing city I have been able to continue to support and work here.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
My business is family owned and operated. We are focused on small businesses and have become a strong help in the dental industry. Our business provides bookkeeping, accounting, payroll, tax preparation, and all other accounting related services. We work with several types of accounting software and can support any one off projects as well as long term support.

Our goal is to help and support small business in getting their books in order and keeping them on track to be ready each tax season. Our Quality Assured touch means we are on call to help as needed when any issues arise. Most of our service is remote but, we do visit our clients office as needed to provide the additional support as needed.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Make relationships with others in your field to support one another, Do not look at each other as competition but, provide the support to help each other with referrals and clients because you each have strengths and weaknesses that can provide long term growth for both.
