Today we’d like to introduce you to Sylvia Diaz, CPP, PMP.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started my career in payroll 18 years ago when I moved to San Antonio looking for a new start. Up to that point a had spent 10 years in a successful career in Management. I had just given birth to my youngest daughter and was looking for a career change so I could have a more work life balance. I was given the opportunity to work for one of the top payroll providers in the world “ADP”. I spent 13 years building my knowledge and payroll experience at ADP before moving on to consulting in 2020. I received my CPP certification (certified payroll professional) in 2017 and my PMP certification (project Manager Professional) in 2021. I returned to school in 2023 to complete my master’s in business administration at Texas A&M San Antonio which I graduated with distinction in 2024. I worked for a couple of consulting firms before going on my own in 2024. In 2025 I launched my website, online training and services. It has been an exciting and rewarding journey. I believe and giving back to the community, so I volunteered to assist and conduct classes for at the San Antonio payroll chapter in 2022. In addition, I served at the San Antonio local chapter for project managers as a director of sponsorship for 1 year in 2020. I was also a CASA volunteer (Court Appointed Special Advocate) for a year in 2020. It has been a pleasure and honor to be a part of the San Antonio community for that past 18 years. I am very grateful for all the welcoming people I had the opportunity to work with in my career. I have learned so much and have always felt welcomed by everyone in the San Antonio community.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I would say that one of the most difficult journeys in my career was when I went back to school in 2023. I was working full time and the 11-month MBA program at Texas A&M was very intense and challenging. I had to go to school in person 3 days a week from 5:30 PM-9:30 PM. There were also some Saturdays from 8:00 AM-3:00 PM. There were homework, presentations, and exams on a weekly basis. I worked Monday Friday 7:00AM-4:00 PM. It was normal for me to be up until 1:00 AM everyday doing homework and spend most of the day Saturday and Sunday doing homework. It was by far the most challenging moment in my life. I just stayed focused and reminded myself this was only for 11 months, and I could do it. Positive talk and remembering that this goal was so important to me was what kept me going. I value education and knowledge overall, getting my masters was a dream I had put on hold for over 10 years, and now it was time to make that dream come true.

Some of my favorite childhood memories are the ones involving my favorite Aunt Lupe. She taught me how to speak French and how to play the piano. These are skills I wish to master someday.
