Inspiring Conversations with María Murillo of Lyvro Publishing

Today we’d like to introduce you to María Murillo.

María, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
This journey started in the most unexpected way…no grand plan, just the realization that I’d already taken steps in this direction without even meaning to. It began with writing about my dog, Sascha, and getting completely hooked on rhymes while retelling moments from our life together. What started as a simple creative outlet quickly picked up momentum. Before I knew it, I had ideas for multiple books and a growing desire to bring them to life myself, which eventually led me to self-publish (something I had zero experience with). It’s been a wild ride full of learning curves, but I’ve truly loved every bit of it.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, especially since this was all new to me. Learning the ins and outs of self-publishing, from formatting to distribution, was a steep learning curve. There were plenty of “What am I even doing?” moments, technical challenges that made me want to throw my computer out the window, and more trial and error than I care to admit. But those struggles became valuable lessons and I’ve come to appreciate the process, even the messy parts.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I actually have a full-time job leading a Project Management Office, so this publishing venture is my personal passion project. It’s something I’ve poured a lot of heart into outside of work hours. Balancing both roles has definitely been a challenge, but it’s also made the journey even more rewarding. This business is where I get to tap into my creativity and share something meaningful with the world.

Right now, the focus is on dog-themed stories that celebrate the love, loyalty, and life lessons dogs bring into our lives. But we’re just getting started. As we grow, the plan is to explore new themes and continue finding meaningful ways to connect with readers.

Also, our debut book, dog+girl, releases on September 1 and wouldn’t be what it is without the incredible talent of my illustrator, Juli Litkei. She brought the story to life with so much heart and creativity, and I’m endlessly grateful for her and for everyone who’s cheered me on along the way.

What makes you happy?
Easy.
My dog: Keeps me grounded.
Music: Keeps me moving.
Coffee: Keeps me caffeinated.
Chapstick: Keeps me moisturized.
People I love: Keep me (mostly) sane.
