Today we’d like to introduce you to Rhea Patterson.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My introduction to Pilates began as a young pre-professional dancer, where mat work was a regular part of my weekly training. I quickly discovered its profound ability to enhance strength and control, while also serving as a vital preventative and rehabilitative practice against injury. This early understanding of Pilates’s benefits stayed with me as I embarked on a decade-long Broadway career, performing in demanding shows like Sweet Charity, Wicked, Guys and Dolls, and Aladdin for over a decade.
During those rigorous years, I found Pilates to be the only method that consistently prepared and maintained my body for the physical demands of eight shows a week. My unwavering belief in its power led me to pursue Pilates teacher training while still performing in Aladdin, completing it successfully during maternity leave. This personal experience became even more profound when Pilates proved instrumental in my recovery from a challenging birth, enabling my return to the stage with minimal complications—a truly visceral reminder of the body’s resilience when practice, patience, and persistence guide rehabilitation.
Early in my teaching career, a client noted my ‘good eye for the body and a playful ease in my Pilates side manner,’ a compliment that guides my approach today. My core mission is to empower individuals not to look like me or move like me, but to feel present and embodied in their own skin. I don’t see myself as an authority dictating movements, but rather as an experienced mover dedicated to guiding clients toward their highest, most functional, and embodied selves through the transformative Pilates Method.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Absolutely not. The road has been far from smooth; as the saying goes, ‘we make the path by walking.’ My journey to this point has been marked by unexpected twists and turns. Leaving New York and the stage was never part of my original plan, but in 2015, I relocated to Texas for love and family, unintentionally sacrificing a central part of my identity.
Arriving in Houston as a new mother, completely dependent on my husband, I soon realized this new path was more uphill than anticipated. A significant crossroads emerged when my husband was laid off soon after our arrival: return to the familiar in New York, or bravely forge a new beginning? We chose the latter, moving to San Antonio for family support, navigating two family businesses—one in Pilates, one unrelated—two young children, and the profound weight of grief following the unexpected passing of both my parents.
By 2023, I found myself navigating a new chapter as a single mother on my own in a city that didn’t yet feel like home. This pivotal moment inspired me to focus on what truly mattered: my children, my health, my friendships, and my unique gift. I recommitted to building my private Pilates practice, rediscovered my passion for dance, and embraced living as fully and joyfully as possible with those I cherish, both near and far.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Pilates with Rhea?
Pilates with Rhea leverages my decades of experience in movement and healing arts to offer a deeply personalized Pilates experience. Our approach integrates mindful movement with comprehensive wellness education, fostering a profound body-mind connection and optimizing daily life through exceptional instruction and collaborative rehabilitative support when needed.
My specialities emerged from my personal experiences to word of mouth after commiting to learning and expanding my knowledge with a client to support their individual needs. This led me to working holistically and systematically with individuals managing special conditions such as scoliosis, hypermobility, pre/postnatal care (including diastasis recti for both men and women), arthritis management, and joint replacement recovery. What truly distinguishes Pilates with Rhea is my foundational philosophy: I view Pilates not merely as a workout or temporary fix, but as a consistent way of life. It’s a practice designed to meet each individual exactly where there are on their unique journey, fostering lasting well-being and functional movement.
I am most proud of my brand’s unwavering integrity and compassionate approach to the body, particularly given the evolution of Pilates today. While the Pilates Method was originally a codified system developed by Joseph H. Pilates, it has since grown to incorporate many diverse movement modalities and teaching approaches. This means that each teacher brings a unique perspective to the work, and clients should understand that ‘one size’ does not fit all in the Pilates world.
If you are seeking a highly specialized, knowledgeable, and compassionate guide to your body through the Pilates Method, one that respects its origins while tailoring it to your individual needs, Pilates with Rhea offers high-quality individual and small group instruction designed specifically for you.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
Over the next 5-10 years, I anticipate significant shifts in the Pilates industry, driven by an increasing awareness of holistic well-being and personalized health. We’re moving beyond Pilates solely as a fitness trend; it’s becoming recognized as an essential component of preventative care, chronic pain management, and long-term physical resilience.
I foresee a stronger integration of Pilates with allied health professions, with more medical professionals recommending it for rehabilitation and pre-habilitation. There will also be a continued demand for highly specialized instructors who can address complex conditions and cater to diverse populations, moving away from a one-size-fits-all model towards truly individualized programming.
Technology will play an increasingly supportive role, potentially enhancing accessibility through virtual platforms and innovative equipment, but the core value will remain in the expert, compassionate guidance of experienced instructors in real time. The industry’s future lies in its ability to adapt and serve as a fundamental tool for empowerment, helping individuals cultivate a deeper, more intuitive connection to their bodies throughout their lifespan.
