Rising Stars: Meet Jacqueline Primrose of Manor, TX

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jacqueline Primrose.

Hi Jacqueline, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am a mother, grandmother, and business owner of JPE Wellness Advocates. I am originally from Washington, DC. I came to Austin, TX in 1998. I was raised by a single mom in a very poor and under privileged neighborhood. There was daily fight for the basic necessities. We literally lived hand to mouth. As is now common, but was much less so back then, I became pregnant, through an assault. I endured much bullying, ostracism and criticism from my family, school, and community. It propelled me to do all I could to overcome my circumstances and do what I could to do the best for my child. I started by going back to night school to finish achieving my high school diploma, and enrolling and graduating from secretarial school in Washington, DC. My first 9 to 5 job was with an urban housing developer, and paid $5 an hour. I was glad to be working for a black owned company. But after 2 years of working there, I never got a raise or benefits of any kind. I was told that it’s because I was assisted with housing, which I appreciated initially, but didn’t know it came with bullets and drive bys.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Working as secretary for various lobbying firms enabled me to earn a pretty good income starting out. But I was also plagued by bad relationship choices which led to another child, which included enduring a period of domestic violence. After leaving that relationship, I met, fell in love, and married a man who seemed to have promise of stability, but in the end, we were not really compatible, my husband became addicted to crack and heroin, and now I am suffering from anxiety disorder. Thus, when a friend invited me to move to Austin I couldn’t wait.

I moved to Austin from Washington, DC at the height of the crack epidimic. my son was beginning to get involved with gangs, and my daughter was pre-teen, girls going wild. This was my motivation to make a change. So, with encouragement from a friend already living in Austin, my intent on starting a new career in IT, guided by my faith, and with no job, no family, no encouragement for my minimalist reboot plan, I was able to get a job with a prominent IT startup, be promoted to Systems Admin within a year of starting, earned my Bachelors in Information Technology, obtained my CISA.

Since then I have served on several committees and volunteered to mentor youth in the community. One bonus from this is that my son, turned away from gang activity, pursued a career in Telecom, and has also been working in IT ever since. I have worked in various IT Project Management positiions with the State of Texas for 15 years retiring in June of this year.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?

After retiring, I will pursue my first loves of writing while working as a financial professional and educator. I also will pursue real estate investing. I also have a passion for showing women how to plan and budget and get their finances to where they can break the cycle of poverty and leave a legacy for their families.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Well being willing to break some rules, take risks and be vulnerable. One of the things women do that doesn’t serve them, is being nice and putting their own goals aside to support others in achieving their own. You have to be your own advocate. But always do your best to give back to those who can use encouragement. What has worked for me is to go outside of my comfort zone and stretching myself beyond what I feel I am comfortable doing. Also surround yourself with others who are smarter and more accomplished than you. If you’re the smartest person in the room, you had better be mentoring someone. If not, you’re not going to learn anything that will get you beyond where you are. And not everything is about money. Know your why, why you do something is so much more important than how much you make doing it.
