Today we’d like to introduce you to Victoria.
Hi Victoria, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
# Journey from South San Antonio to Licensed Professional Counselor
Growing up on the south side of San Antonio, I lived near Kelley Air Force Base with my three siblings and parents. My father worked at the base for many years, which rooted our family in the community. I attended South San High School, where my life took a significant turn—I became a teenage mom at 17. After the birth of my first son, I faced the challenging decision to drop out of high school to care for him due to an illness. The experience taught me resilience and the importance of alternative education paths, as obtaining my GED played a critical role in my journey.
## Embracing Educational Opportunities
Despite the obstacles, I always believed that there is more than one way to achieve one’s goals. By the age of 21, I had two more children. Seeking new opportunities, I moved to Killeen, TX, and enrolled at Central Texas College. A pivotal moment came when I realized, as I walked my son to kindergarten, that I wanted to pursue my education before he did. This revelation led me back to San Antonio, where I enrolled at Palo Alto College. Initially, I aimed to pursue a law degree, but my passion for English led me to transfer to the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). As a proud Roadrunner, I graduated in May 2003 with a Bachelor’s degree in English.
## From Teaching to Counseling
Following graduation, I immersed myself in the educational field, teaching reading, coaching, and even leading culinary classes for high school students at Northside ISD. Through these experiences, I discovered my calling to become a school counselor. I embarked on a master’s degree in Counseling, initially focused on school counseling. However, I found myself captivated by clinical counseling. The process of providing life-changing therapy to clients was deeply fulfilling.
## Establishing a Practice
I worked diligently to become a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), achieving this milestone in August 2024. Even before earning my full license, I ventured into entrepreneurship and opened my practice in May 2024 on S. Flores near Cesar Chavez. Serving my community, which holds a special place in my heart, was a dream come true.
I now operate an office off Starcrest in 410 and am excited to open another location in the Medical Center near 410 and Babcock. My vision is to expand our services by hiring three to four new therapists who can cater to different age groups. This expansion will enable us to serve our community more comprehensively and effectively, continuing my lifelong commitment to helping others through counseling.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
# Overcoming Life’s Challenges
## Early Motherhood and Education
Facing the incredible responsibility of being a mother of three by the age of 21 was a monumental challenge. Balancing the demands of motherhood while pursuing my education and providing for my family required immense strength and perseverance. The journey was filled with obstacles, but it also taught me invaluable lessons about resilience and determination.
## Navigating a Difficult Divorce
At a young age, I found myself going through a very difficult divorce. This period was particularly challenging as I was left to raise my children on my own. Despite the emotional and financial struggles, I was determined to create a stable and nurturing environment for my little family. This experience taught me the importance of independence and self-reliance, as well as the power of unconditional love.
## Battling with Self-Esteem and Self-Worth
Growing up, I faced significant battles with my self-esteem and self-worth. It was a journey of self-discovery and growth as I worked tirelessly to overcome these internal struggles. I learned to believe in myself and recognize my own capabilities, which became crucial in navigating the challenges of early motherhood and divorce.
## Triumph Over a Medical Crisis
Most recently, I faced a daunting medical challenge: a pulmonary embolism. This occurred last summer, right before I was fully licensed and just after opening my office. It was a terrifying experience that tested my strength and resolve. However, with the unwavering support of my wonderful husband, I was reassured that I could overcome this. His guidance and encouragement were instrumental in helping me through this scary time.
## Finding Strength in Support
Throughout my journey, the support of loved ones has been a cornerstone of my resilience. My husband’s belief in me provided the comfort and reassurance I needed to keep moving forward. Together, we navigated the fears and uncertainties, proving that with love and support, we can overcome even the most daunting challenges.
## Reflection and Growth
Looking back, I am proud of the obstacles I have overcome. Each challenge has made me stronger and more determined. I have learned that no matter how difficult life may seem, there is always a way through. Embracing my journey has empowered me to help others facing similar struggles, proving that resilience and hope can lead to personal growth and fulfillment.
