Meet Kenneth Durant of Northeast

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kenneth Durant.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was about 17 to 18 years old when I first really started rapping. Originally going by Kdawg from 2007-2015 I rebranded my name to Kenneth Durant in 2020 after taking a 5 year hiatus from making music to start a family with my wife and beautiful children. I once again started started slowly getting myself back into the music scene by dropping verses every week which I called Wreckin On Wednesday for the next year to showcase my artistry and consistency in the local hip hop scene. Along the way my wife Redlipstickmouse and I also formed a married rap duo called Mouse Meets Dawg.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Definitely have had a lot of bumps in the road in my lifetime. A lot of wins but a lot more losses. One of the biggest reasons I stopped doing music in 2015 was because I really needed to evaluate myself as a person and I knew if I really wanted to start a family that I was gonna have to build that first and once that settled I could pick up this mic again. Even then after my family was established I was taking a lot of “L’s” per se but only because I still had a lot to learn and grow from. From losing my grandpa & father, to losing my job and having to start over at the bottom. All of these things were needed to shape me into the person I still am becoming today.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Well I love to make music that is my true passion whether it’s writing verses or coming up with concepts for songs or content I am absolutely encapsulated by music. Ine of my biggest accomplishments was making a song for my job at the HEB Warehouse here in San Antonio, TX. It’s been about 5 years now and I still have people ask me about it till this day. It’s one of the things that really catapulted me back into making music again so it was a proud moment for me. Aside from that creating the Wreckin On Wednesday series where I would have people pick industry beats for me and I would drop a verse over the beat every week. That was a big time for me as well coming back into the scene I knew things had changed and new faces wouldn’t know who I was so I needed a way to showcase my verbal skills and what better way then to consistently do it for a whole year.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
It’s the one thing my wife always tells me, that everything happens for a reason. So many times in my life I was always going against the grain and wondering why things would go wrong or I would feel like I could change certain things. Eventually I had to let that go and just let life happen because at the end of the day God has you on a certain path and some of the things you think are meant to be in your life might not be what’s really meant for you. That goes for everything from professions, friends, etc.
