Today we’d like to introduce you to Carmen Whizin.
Hi Carmen, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Essentially we started with Dewy Organics (skincare), transitioned to Dewy Skin Studio (skincare & facials), and now we are Dewy Skin Spa (skin care, facials, day spa, & lab). I was going to school for biology because I fell in love with all things botany and biochemistry. I enjoyed working in a lab and the aesthetic of the glass beakers and cleanliness made me realize this is what I needed to pursue. I asked my professor if I could use his lab to create skin care products and sell them at my local farmer’s market. Upon graduating I decided to pursue Esthetics to dive deeper into skincare and became a licensed esthetician. I continued to work on my skincare products and won a grant to take my business to the next level. I started in a tiny 600-square-foot suite making skin care and providing facial services. Two years later I opened a storefront skin care shop and spa in downtown San Antonio catering to visiting tourists and locals. We gained so much experience and met many amazing people from all over the world. Upon our lease being due we transitioned into a new location! Three months in we passionately cater to the local people of San Antonio seeking dewy skin and a moment to decompress and unplug.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Being a young entrepreneur has been difficult at times when having to work with people who assume you have no experience because of your age. Another big struggle we have faced is having no startup funding and learning how to be extremely resourceful by learning how to prioritize expenses. Lastly, the economic decline of services and goods after the pandemic.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
We specialize in facials where we not only seek results for our clients but make sure they take advantage of the moment to relax and leave feeling fresh as a daisy. We are very proud of the fact that we have our skincare brand where we create skin care products for the people of south Texas by incorporating native ingredients like cactus and aloe vera. We are also set apart from others because we concentrate on being a very friendly spa, we know skin care is a luxury and our prices are very friendly, also provide product dupes, and work with people’s budgets while still attending to their needs. Lastly, we go in-depth about each service by providing a follow-up email going over step by step of everything we did during your appointment and what my best recommendations are.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up I loved art and being outside in nature. I enjoyed making crafts and going outside with a magnifying glass to observe snails and leaves. I was very adventurous and lived for roller coaster rides and hopping on four wheelers. I remember being a kid and hoping that one day I could own a craft store to sell my crafts to others. I feel that I was able to manifest that through making skin care products and channeling my creativity with our photoshoots and brand aesthetic.
