Meet San Juanita Pate of Sana Counseling Services, PLLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to San Juanita Pate

San Juanita, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was born and raised in central San Antonio. I am the first generation in my family to graduate from college. I commenced my career as a Child Protective Services caseworker. During my tenure with CPS, I collaborated with children who required psychiatric intervention. I became acquainted with Southwest Mental Health Center, which has since evolved into Clarity. Subsequently, I was appointed as a case manager for Southwest Mental Health Center. I found great satisfaction in working with the children in this capacity. I played a pivotal role in establishing psychological services for children upon their transition from inpatient hospitalization to outpatient services, including counseling and outpatient psychiatric care. I was fortunate to have numerous role models and dedicated staff at Southwest Mental Health Center who inspired me to pursue a degree in counseling. While pursuing my education, I simultaneously worked as a bilingual teacher for Northside Independent School District. Upon obtaining my master’s degree in education with a concentration in counseling, I embarked on my career as a school counselor. Currently, I am employed full-time by Northside ISD as a school counselor. However, I recognized the need for high-quality therapists in the local San Antonio and surrounding areas who cater to Spanish-speaking families. Additionally, I perceived a demand for Spanish-speaking play therapists. I decided to open my own practice in 2024.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I have been fortunate to have encountered influential individuals in my professional journey who have provided invaluable guidance. One such individual is Eddie Reyes, an LPC and the founder of 210 Counseling, who has assisted me in navigating the complexities of establishing my own practice. While the experience is rewarding, Eddie has shared his experiences, challenges, and imparted numerous valuable lessons.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
The name Sana embodies the concept of healing, a principle deeply rooted in my childhood. I chose this name because it brings to mind my mother’s comforting words: “Sana Sana Colita de Rana.” This phrase, which we often used to soothe minor injuries, symbolized healing through gentle care. The literal translation, “Heal Heal Frog Tail,” may sound whimsical, but its true meaning lies in the nurturing energy it conveyed. These words taught me resilience and the ability to endure pain, which is the same sense of strength I aim to foster in each of my clients. My goal is to support both children and adults facing challenges such as depression, anxiety, and trauma-related struggles. I specialize in helping individuals manage conditions like ADHD, bipolar disorder, depression, and anxiety, among others. In our first session, we will take time to get to know each other, address any questions you may have about therapy or my professional experience, and work together to create a personalized treatment plan with clear goals. As we continue therapy, we will collaborate to meet those goals and adjust them as necessary to ensure progress. I also provide play therapy for children as young as 3 years old. Since young children communicate through play, I offer a safe space for them to explore, build self-confidence, and learn to regulate their emotions. Additionally, I consult with Sean Munley, an LPC and Registered Play Therapist Supervisor, to ensure that my therapeutic approach is both effective and informed by the latest best practices in play therapy.

Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My most cherished childhood memory is the arrival of the ice cream truck. The distinctive melody that heralded its presence would instantly evoke a profound sense of joy within my brothers and our friends. On occasion, we would eagerly mount our bicycles and embark on a thrilling pursuit of the ice cream truck, pedaling furiously over several blocks. This exhilarating experience enhanced the palatability of the ice cream we ultimately consumed.
