Conversations with Hiromi Martinez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hiromi Martinez

Hi Hiromi , we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
The journey started back in 2022 when my best friend, Julie Tovar, and I met through the K-pop community. We both collectively loved K-pop over 17 years, along with the dancing aspect of it. Therefore, it felt natural when we decided in April of 2023 to create our own dance cover group. Throughout the first couple of months, it was just her and I performing, then as the months went by, we started to slowly grow into the group we have become now. What caught their attention was the fact that we not only dance to K-pop choreography, but we also incorporate different genres of dance

Today, we have blossomed into a 6-member group and although we are a small community we hope to inspire others to not just join us but to also have the freedom to make their own content.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
While we are still fairly new to the community, our story is not one without a challenge. The first year, we were very limited in what songs we could perform. We had to choose between making a solo cover, duo cover, or make up a whole new choreography for songs that didn’t have a dance to it. Thankfully we are grateful for that time. It showed us that even with the two of us, we can make great content. Now that we have more members, we don’t have to worry about being limited to just 1-2 person songs.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We might just be dancers performing for the camera, but behind the scenes we are so much more than that. For being a small group, the two of us have our plates full. I handle the gritty work of production, taking care of editing our videos, our social media photoshoots and managing our accounts. My partner Julie is in charge of searching for location spots, the storyboard for the videos, the wardrobe selection, and keeping us in check during our practices, essentially making us look our best. My older brother, Christopher Martinez, has also played a huge role as our videographer. Despite having no prior experience, his dedication, creativity, and willingness to learn have been irreplaceable to our team. Together, the three of us give the same amount of effort as a full-on production team. We also cannot overlook the dedication and hard work of our amazing members-Giana, Briana, Reyleesa, and Maddie. Their unwavering commitment to mastering each choreography and preparing themselves physically for every shoot is truly inspiring. Their trust in us as their leader and captain means the world, and we’ll always be deeply grateful for their passion, strength, and teamwork. It’s their dedication that continues to boost our vision, and we are so fortunate to share this journey with them.

Even though we are busy with our personal lives, we are proud that we can manage the group and be able to show others what we are capable of despite our setbacks. Our group feels more like a bunch of friends in a club all striving for the same goal, being the best versions of ourselves.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Although we have not taken any risks as a group, we do face them individually. Whether it’s during practice or filming, there is always the possibility of injury. Luckily, we all have been able to avoid that so far, and we hope that day never comes.

While others see risks as life threatening or dangerous, we view them as an opportunity to grow, push our limits and learn something new.
