Meet Krystina Sibley: The San Antonio Artist You Need to Know

Today we’d like to introduce you to Krystina Sibley

Hi Krystina, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have been creating art most of my life for family, friends, and homes that I lived in. Beyond creating art, I have experience as a curator at art events when I lived in San Francisco and Tampa Bay, and have volunteered in the curatorial department at the Salvador Dali Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg, Florida. But it took me experiencing physical health and life challenges in my mid 40s for me to truly step into being a visual artist.

Collage making has been an important means of expression for me and I like to focus on the intersection of art, science, elements from nature, and the layers of our consciousness. Each collage is a unique mix of colors and textures, upcycled objects, inspiration from my travels, and living and working all over the world.

I was rear-ended in an auto accident which dislocated my jaw and cervical discs. After two surgeries and building resiliency through three years of disability, I knew that I was alive for a bigger, deeper reason to share my art and spread more joy and creativity in the world. I looked at the collection of collages I had made over the last 20 years and was ready to bring them and some new ones into prime time. I moved back to the cultural hotspot of my hometown in San Antonio, Texas, after being away for 27 years around the world, recovered from jaw surgery in late 2024 to start working and creating a few days a week, and found a great spot in the art neighborhood of Southtown that inspires me.

Each artwork of mine is an oasis filled with insights and sparks of joy. I blend acrylic painting with spray paint, found objects, typography, numerous languages, and found objects, creating alternate worlds and points of view that intrigue the viewer. Some of my pieces also can be hung in any direction, and newfound treasures are revealed with each turn of the canvas.

I enjoy showing a colorful flow of words and artifacts in my art that have an uplifting or communal message that unites our humanity. With my background as a meditation and yoga teacher, art can also help us transcend the everyday. These visual reminders can help us to find the beauty and joy in the now.

My “Enjoy Every Moment” artwork, for example, is an homage to all the places I have lived – Texas, California, England, Virginia, and Florida – and these multicultural epicenters have made me into the artist that I am today. Inherent in each moment is a gift with loving, creative frequencies that one can tap into for more joy. That is what creating collages does for me, and I look forward to creating and being involved in more events that combine art, meditation and yoga sessions for the community to enjoy. I also look forward to creating more workshops where people can explore collage making, mindfulness practices, and learn from the community.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I am a warrior who has overcome physical struggles due to auto accidents, personal growth after a divorce, and previous jobs where company culture didn’t align with my values. Luckily, I am currently with a very EQ PR and branding company that is women-led. My creativity is the steady constant that always shows up for me, even on the toughest days and years of my life. I am grateful for my spirit’s resilience that helps me find a way through, even if it takes another day, week, month, or year to create the reality I want in my life.

That’s why I love collages, they are like the layers of our life and reflect multiple dimensions of our mind, body, and soul. While I already have a great body of work, I can see other avenues that I am ready to explore with collages. I am excited to create neon art and multimedia immersive environments, work with mirrors, and build sculptures.

I am so grateful for my hometown of San Antonio, Texas, and the arts and culture community that has embraced me with open arms and has grown so much since I left in the late 1990s. I love la mezcla – the mix – of art styles and passion that the artists here exude. In every city that I have lived, I have always connected with and resonated with the creatives as we are the dreamers, doers, and uniters that make a community more colorful and inclusive.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Being at the intersection of art and science distinguishes my art work. I enjoy exploring the layers of consciousness, from brainwave states, music frequencies, and quantum physics to unlocking our perception to other ideas and realities. Many of my pieces include upcycled objects – whenever a computer no longer works, a piece of jewelry breaks, a DJ turntable from musician friends stops running, or I find a discarded treasure while walking through nature or an urban setting, I see how it can take new life in a collage.

People enjoy seeing something new each time they look at my art, and how each piece tells a story. They find and cultivate more joy, peace, beauty, a sense of adventure, and fun as they enjoy my piece in their home or workplace, or gift it to others.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
I am called on by people and businesses for special commissions. Whether it’s a piece of art for a wedding or newborn gift, birthday, unique occasion, or for a brand who wants a distinct viewpoint, I am honored to create these special art works. I love working with individuals and brands to include their favorite themes, objects, and colors for these statement pieces. For brand launches and campaigns, art and art events are an incredible way to bring together communities, create a memorable impression, and distinguish your business from traditional advertising, marketing, and events.

I also love having collectors from all over the world for my original art and people who also enjoy my art merchandise. I think it’s important to make art accessible, so whether you have a super affordable tote bag or throw pillow with a piece of my art or bliss out on my art version of a yoga mat or with a tea mug and serving tray with a super colorful piece of my art, I love how art can be on anything and anywhere. I also offer prints that are affordable on different types of mediums, so you can choose from canvas, metal, wood, and all kinds of high-quality papers.

Many individuals and groups also seek me out for workshops, lessons, and retreats. Whether you have 1 hour, want 5 lessons, or want to include me as part of your group or work retreat, it is an incredible experience to learn how to create collages. Each workshop or lesson is tailored to the individual or group so that we go at a pace that is good for your learning style and suited to what techniques you want to learn. As a certified Meditation and Yoga Teacher and Therapeutic Art Life Coach, I have also been called on to offer multiple unique sessions at retreats. These practices help you to give yourself permission to be open to where the canvas leads you, reflect on concepts and themes you are exploring in your life, and be bold and challenge reality. Life is all about connecting with a deeper meaning and unlocking portals of self discovery, and I am grateful to share these gifts and talents to help individuals and groups.
