Rising Stars: Meet Jess Oehler of Alamo Ranch

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jess Oehler

Hi Jess, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I began working in the beauty industry in 2005 as a salon receptionist. I was in college, pursuing a degree in Human Resources. After I graduated, I worked in my field for a couple of years before I completely burnt out. I decided that I was way too young to be miserable for the next 30+ years, so I decided to go to cosmetology school because I loved the industry. After graduation, I realized that I was much more interested in the skincare side of the industry so I sought out a job with that focus. I ended up working for a big wax corporation and was shocked how much I loved it. Every day was fast-paced and different and I soon realized that this was exactly what I wanted to do.

After (way too) many years working for this company, I decided that I wanted to branch out on my own. I learned a lot in my time working for someone else but I also knew that I had bigger plans.

I wanted to start my own business that was focused on flawless results and stellar customer service, so that’s exactly what I did in October 2020.

In March of 2020, my husband’s job was transferred to San Antonio. The whole world was shut down due to the pandemic and I was out of work in a new city where I didn’t know a single person. I began planning my moves and in October of 2020, Ritual Wax Studio was born. It was absolutely a rough start but I stayed true to my mission and used social media to promote myself every day.

There were many days in the beginning that I had no clients at all, but after a few months, my business picked up speed in Alamo Ranch. My social media and word of mouth referrals filled my books within 6 months and I was thrilled. Now, after almost 5 years in business, I have over 400 5-star reviews and a consistent waitlist. I absolutely love what I do and my clients know it.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. Social media makes business ownership look easy and instantly successful but that’s rarely ever the case. I started Ritual Wax Studio in the midst of a global COVID pandemic and knew it would be a rough road. There were so many days and months that made me want to quit, but I was so confident in my skill and mission that I kept with it.

I was so used to being fully booked every day while working for someone else, but figuring out how to market myself and get my business out there was a huge learning curve and definitely not something that’s taught in beauty school.

Now, almost 5 years later, I’m fully booked with a waitlist most of the time but I never forget where I started. I treat every new client the same way that I treat clients that I’ve had for years. It’s important to me that everyone feels welcomed, appreciated and important.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I own a full body waxing studio, but I specialize and am an expert in brazilian waxes. I’ve been licensed for nearly 15 years and I think it’s important to never stop learning and trying to improve.

I’m so proud that Ritual Wax Studio has become a popular and very highly recommended spot in Alamo Ranch because I would cease to exist without those very clients that recommend me.

I think I’ve done a great job establishing my brand to stand out among other local waxing options because I focus on creating authentic relationships with my clients while providing flawless results. I have not only built a clientele here but have also built genuine friendships and ties to my community.

I think what sets me apart is my commitment to customer service and generally low prices compared to my competition. As previously mentioned, relationships are super important to me, so I ask questions, show up to events, and donate to good causes in my community because I honestly care.

I’m fully aware that I could charge higher prices because of my 15 years of experience, but instead I choose to buy my product in bulk in order to keep my prices low. I’m as flexible and accommodating as possible, and my clients appreciate that. In this economy- we’re all busy and broke so I never want to add to that burden. Overall, a happy, repeat customer is top priority.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
Brazilian waxing, and really any type of body waxing can be intimidating to those that have never been waxed before. Every single one of us is self conscious and nervous to even consider it! But I promise that my space is 100% a judgement-free zone and that aside from leaving my clients hair-free… making them comfortable is my top priority.

As self-conscious as you’re feeling- I swear I’m feeling it too! My advice for seeking out a waxer is to read reviews and to check their social media to get a good feel for who you’re booking with. In my experience, if you get a good vibe from that research- you’re in good hands!

Pricing:

  • Brazilian wax – $59
  • Underarms – $20
