Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Sanchez
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
HASH – Heal And Spread Healing is family-owned and operated by two brothers from humble beginnings. Owners Michael & Rogelio Sanchez are Southside natives who saw a need for vegan food options and sober environments in a sea of bars and fast food establishments.
“Our mission is to provide a safe space for everyone. We focus on delicious vegan comfort food and non-alcoholic drinks. As members of the recovery community, we strive to be an inviting option to the sober, sober-curious, and everyone else. Our bar program, led by cocktail coordinator Jaselin Holstein, offers creative and thoughtfully crafted non-alcoholic beverages that elevate the experience. The front-of-house team, made up of Jaselin and Lauren Pittman, keeps everything running smoothly, ensuring a welcoming atmosphere and seamless service. We couldn’t do this without them.”
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been a smooth road, but every challenge has shaped us into what we are today. Starting HashVeganEats in the middle of the pandemic, without financial backing or traditional business experience, was tough, but it allowed us to learn and grow at our own pace. San Antonio, especially the Southside, has deep-rooted food traditions, and introducing something as unique as a sober vegan space was uncharted territory. While some didn’t understand it at first, many in the community embraced it, showing us that there was a real need for a place like this.
What has made this journey possible is the incredible support we’ve received. Mentors from the food industry—some not even sober or vegan—have helped us with advice, equipment, and encouragement. Our community has shown up in ways we never expected, proving that San Antonio is full of people who believe in something bigger than themselves. We’ve faced struggles, but our love for this city and its people keeps us moving forward. Seeing how much this space has meant to others reminds us why we started, and we’re honored to continue growing alongside the community that has supported us from the beginning.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
At HashVeganEats, we specialize in plant-based comfort food and are known for being San Antonio’s only sober bar, creating a welcoming space for those in recovery and anyone seeking a community-driven atmosphere. What sets us apart is our deeper mission—addressing sobriety, food insecurity, and support for marginalized communities—while still providing high-quality, flavorful food. We’re most proud of the impact we’ve had, offering not just a meal but a place where people feel seen, supported, and valued. With decades of experience in the restaurant industry, we bring a hands-on, service-driven approach to everything we do, ensuring that HashVeganEats is more than just a restaurant—it’s a movement.
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Absolutely. The Covid-19 crisis taught us the importance of adaptability, community, and resilience. Opening HashVeganEats in the middle of the pandemic meant navigating constant uncertainty, but it also gave us the opportunity to grow at our own pace, learning as we went. We realized that starting small and staying flexible was a strength, allowing us to adjust to challenges without being overwhelmed.
More importantly, the pandemic reinforced the power of community. We saw firsthand how much people need spaces that provide connection and support, especially in difficult times. It solidified our belief that HashVeganEats is more than just a restaurant—it’s a resource, a safe haven, and a gathering place for those who need it most. Through all the struggles, we’ve learned that passion, purpose, and a strong community will always help us push forward.
