Life & Work with Caitlin Morris of San Antonio, TX

Today we’d like to introduce you to Caitlin Morris

Hi Caitlin, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I was born during a blizzard in a Yale University dorm room but first fell in love with art in the small town of Davidson, NC. In my youth, I had the privilege of studying with amazing artists who encouraged an intuitive approach.

I moved a lot as a child and an adult. After leaving my hometown of Davidson at eleven, I had the privilege of spending time in Kansas City, Portland, OR, Austin, TX, NYC, and Charlotte, NC.

Prior to pursuing a professional art career, I was a janitor, HIV street outreach worker, singer in punk bands, and a youth mentoring program manager. Eventually, I pursued a career in finance spanning over a decade, including providing research support at a 5th Avenue hedge fund and obtaining a CFP® certification amongst other designations and licenses.

My work is heavily influenced by an academic focus in Women’s Studies and growing up in different regions of the United States, which exposed me to unique people, places, and ways of thinking.

A year ago, I relocated to San Antonio, TX to pursue a new musical project. Currently, I am exploring music composition and filmmaking in attempts to integrate my visual arts expertise with a captivating auditory and narrative experience.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I relocated to San Antonio from Charlotte, NC at the end of 2023, following my divorce. I moved here to pursue a new musical project with two friends I knew from living (and playing music) in Austin, TX ten years prior. Unfortunately, shortly after arriving one of my bandmates passed away and the other relocated back to Austin for work. Abruptly, I was prompted to forge a new path in a new city. I have poured all my emotions into my creative pursuits. My solitude, over the past year, has forced me to stretch myself as a “solo” artist and also, deeply appreciate collaboration, connection, and community.

Obstacles are inevitable. How we rise to the occasion, during difficult times, is what defines our worth.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a multidisciplinary artist, with a formal background in drawing and painting. My work invites viewers to experience an alternate reality communicated through vibrant colors, areas of great detail, and intentional distortion. My acrylic paintings apply a surreal and feminist lens through strong yet often disjointed figures and dreamlike imagery. Subjects find space to exist between dichotomies such as strength and vulnerability as well as, connection and discomfort to their surrounding habitats. Common themes of my work include reclaiming a weaponized “female body” and the human (dis)connection with the nature.

My work encourages audiences to explore neglected parts of their identity and abandon preconceived notions in hopes to better understand our complicated world. Recently, my practice has expanded to include original electronic music composition (check out my solo project “Guidette”) and media projection including writing, directing, and acting in my first short film (“Cheers from Southtown”). I look forward to weaving these new disciplines into my 2D work. My intent is to translate complex ideas into visually compelling and immersive storytelling in an attempt to resonate with a greater and more diversified audience.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
Eating watermelon barefoot at the lake and spitting seeds at my friends.
