Rising Stars: Meet Deacon Rap

Today we’d like to introduce you to Deacon Rap

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
First thing to know is that I come from a music family. My brothers were in a band called, “egshan”. My uncle is in a country band called, “The country horizons band”. My father was a DJ, my Grandma was a country singer, my other uncle was a country singer who went by the name, “the Castro cowboy”. When I was 10 years old and saw 8 mile, I became the rapper of the family.

I was in choir at Pease middle school and John Paul Stevens high school. I sang and played guitar in youth group at True vine Baptist church. I even competed in employee talent shows at sea world. From 2014-2019. I performed in just about every open mic night at every dive bar in San Antonio but my big break wouldn’t come until the pandemic hit.

The first day of the shut down, I saw a post on Facebook that said, “If you don’t leave the pandemic without a new skill set, a new side hustle, and a new contact list. You didn’t lack the time, you lacked the effort”…and I took that personally. I networked with people on Instagram from all over the country and learned a vast amount of knowledge with music business and how to launch myself when the pandemic was over. Since then I have performed and/or guested at every Anime convention inside san antonio at least once and almost every anime convention in the state of Texas.

DEACONRAP is an Otaku/Power Ranger rapper from San Antonio, Texas. He began rapping at the age of 10 after watching 8 mile and started doing nerdy parodies at different cons in 2013 after being inspired by weird al yankovic and others youtubers. Since then He has performed at cons all over the state of Texas, released songs like, “Rise of a legend” and “Meet the Green Ranger” which have gotten hundreds of thousands of streams, and in 2023 he dropped his “power rangers vs Frieza Featuring linda young, the voice of frieza. In 2024, he dropped “side characters”, with chuck huber and “what you gonna do”, with Stephanie Nadolny. Come join him as he morphs into the cosplay and performs songs as the nerdiest rapper in the game! IT’S MORPHING TIME!!!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not. I’ve skipped so much family stuff for this that my mothers side of the family doesn’t even invite me to stuff anymore. I’ve had people in the anime community make up stories about me like someone said I was cheating on my girlfriend, i assaulted someone (i pushed a guy who was trying to hug me without my consent), and a few other things.

It hasn’t been easy financially. Pursuing music is an endless money pit with little to no return.

John Cena once told me, “you don’t put your life on hold for this. You make it your life and you enjoy every second of it”.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I perform original nerdy/otaku rap music at anime conventions. I’m most known for cosplaying power rangers on stage or Elvis in the convention hallway to the point where people sometimes thing another green ranger cosplayer is me. I’m most proud of the fact that I was able to land songs with voice actors from an anime called, “dragonball”.

What sets me apart is that I have a special trait that a lot of other artist don’t have. A special quality that labels and managers (that i do not have) cannot give their artist…RUTHLESS AGGRESSION. Ruthless aggression means making the necessary sacrifices, doing what’s necessary to get to where i want to go. Live, berate, and die for this.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Just like batman, my mission matters more than anything and anyone. My girlfriend can vouch for that. Without that, what do I need to be alive for?
