Daily Inspiration: Meet KAPEESH!

Today we’d like to introduce you to KAPEESH!

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
It all started 1 and a half years ago in San Marcos, Texas. After experimenting with creating our first couple of tracks and finding our sound, Brendan (lead singer/songwriter) gave Kyle (Bass player/producer) a handshake of commitment that set the tide for our efforts we would bring to the table. In our search for our sound, we quickly knew we needed a 5 man crew that had as much passion and dedication to music as we did. Shooting in the dark on social media and flyers around town, we found Joel (rhythm guitarist). Wielding original chord progressions, riffs for days, and fire in his eyes, we knew he was exactly what we needed. With three members we finished our first two singles; Relapse and Red Flags. However, in order to play these new originals live, we needed a drummer. A post on the Texas State Snapchat story got the attention of Van (drummer). having played for years, van radiated with talent and passion to be involved with the music scene. It only took one practice with Van to know that we were starting not just a band but a family and we were that much closer to the stage. The only thing that was missing was a lead guitarist who vibes with the guys, has drive and motivation, and can rip a solo over anything. Having worked together, Brendan brought on Dylan (lead guitarist), who immediately found himself at home with the guys.
Balancing live practice with our new group, and recording sessions in our studio, we released our third single “Its not over”, we quickly honed in on our sound and started making our way to our first live performance.

Meeting through friends of a friend, we met Dani (manager). Having had experience in bands and a good foot in the door to the music scene, Dani was exactly what we needed to find gigs and get our music out where it needed to go. Having just played our first show in November and working on our debut EP, We are excited to be finally making such quick progress on our handshake.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Finding times and days that work for everyone to practice together has been difficult. Balancing school and work with our musical dreams and goals, has been no small task. Also, we must all have undiagnosed ADHD, because nobody can stay on task for the life of us. Thankfully Dani (manager) helps to keep us focused when we cant and keep our eyes on the prize. The most challenging part of being in a band where almost everyone is a songwriter is that you have to fit 5 people worth of awesome ideas into a single song. While most days in the band go well and are productive, we have been known to butt heads over songwriting decisions. If it wasn’t coming from a place of passion it would be a bigger issue, but we are all just excited to get our music out there.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
We are a 5 piece rock and roll group, we lean towards a bluesy sound while still holding a dirty alternative edge. Our sound is a unique amalgamation of all of our personal music tastes. Dylan and Joel, with roots in blues and harder rock. Kyle, with his experience in producing and ear for bass patterns, can lay down rhythmic and intricate bass lines. Van on the drums with big fills and John Bonham/punk rock inspired grooves, and Brendan who’s lyrics often come from personal hardships and true human struggles, paired with a unique vocal style and tone, creates a sound truly unlike any other. We work together well and we spend much of our time moulding and shaping our sound into a true collaborative project between us five.

So far, we are most proud of our song writing abilities and our first live show. For all of the members, our first gig was a special moment, and one that we will not soon forget. It was a long time coming and we were all relieved and proud to have performed live! As the shows keep coming, our original music will continue to make the stage, furthering our influence and building a community of people around us. This comes with a side effect of inspiring us more, giving us confidence and solidifying us as a force in the local music scene.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
People are everything . The amount of people that we needed to get to where we are, has been a blessing that is not taken lightly. Whether its art for a cover on one of our songs, a photographer for our band pictures, or simply just receiving advice or opinions. Kapeesh! Is a collaborative project between community and musicians and will never take our roots for granted.
