Daily Inspiration: Meet Nicole Hatter

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Hatter

Hi Nicole, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
There isn’t a time in my life I can remember where I wasn’t making something. I have always loved painting, creating, photography, design. A photography business and selling my paintings was a natural step that resulted from years of continually doing something I really loved. I started buying photography equipment in earnest when my twins were born. After friends saw some of the images I was taking, more people began asking me to photograph their families as well. This just evolved into a photography business that could have kept me much busier if I hadn’t. also had three babies in 27 months. I spent a few years juggling family photo sessions and many weddings while missing Saturdays with my kids and husband. I had always loved painting, but really painting in earnest came from my desire to be creative while also being able to protect my weekends with my family.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Finding a successful creative outlet at the same time we were building our family was a bit of a challenge. But I love the place I am in now. My kids are a little older and I can dedicate more time to art without feeling guilty that I’m spending time away from them. Also, (and I think this is common for so many creatives) there is a challenge in feeling a bit of imposter syndrome. You make things and wonder if they will resonate with anyone, or if you have any business doing this as a career path. I think with age, and also the many clients I have painted for or done photography for, I have become less concerned with that. Art is so personal and what is appealing to one person might not be appealing to everyone.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Right now I am working on curating a collection for a show. I paint what I love, which is mostly landscape, and mostly Texas. My preferred medium is acrylic on canvas. I still love photography so I have also been enjoying creating more fine art photography (although I still photograph families pretty consistently throughout the year).

What were you like growing up?
My mom says she was always finding cups full of dried paint or concoctions in my desk drawers. I have always been an artistic mess maker, but luckily she is also a creative so she very much encouraged creativity as I was growing up.
